Anyone know what the current law is relating to the DVLA harvesting dates of birth of vehicle registered keepers?

My understanding is that you don't need to divulge it - for your own data security it's obviously a bad idea to do so - but they seem to be implying that you should provide it when dealing with them in connection with a vehicle.

Assuming that you have a UK driving licence, DVLA will already have your DOB on file so what is the issue that you are concerned about?

And everytime you use your driving licence for ID, the person looking will be able to see it too !

Yes, they have it on my driving licence, but that record is not linked to my vehicle. They don't have my DoB on the vehicle reg' document; just my name and address. Why should I be concerned about them having my DoB on the vehicle record? Because the DVLA have been known to sell vehicle records, to scumbag scammer parking companies amongst others.

I can't remember the last time I've used my driving licence for ID; Many moons ago. ID theft is the problem here. The rise in ID theft is in direct correlation to the increase in requirements to prove who you are. Bloody hell! Even the scrap man needs to see your driving licence now!

What exaxctly is the differance between the car parking company (VIA DVLA) having your name and addy as opposed to your name, addy and DOB?

I suppose the problem would be these nefarious parking scammers using your details illegally and passing them on to, well, who knows. However, since you never park illegally you're ok (psst: illegal parking doesn't come into it when dealing with the scammers). But that was not the issue I had in mind, I use it merely as an example of why you should take care of personal details and if possible not divulge them when there's no need to do so. My original question was about the law regarding your obligation or otherwise to provide this information to DVLA, specifically in connection with vehicle ownership.

This is a bit of a long shot, but I'll try anyway: does anyone know of a forum where the contributors actually try and answer a question, rather than huff and puff about the motives behind the question being asked?

Where are DVLA asking for your DOB in relation to a car?

If it's the section on the V5 it says the information is voluntary, so don't fill it in.

Why not ask the DVLA if it's compulsory to hand out your DOB when filling in the V5?

Yep. That's as I understand it, but they have now removed the statement declaring you don't have to provide it, and, if you now licence your car via direct debit they ask for it there as well (no other organisation does this when setting up a DD).

I've got a V5 for one of my cars dated 20th November 2014.

It says that the date of birth is not required by law.

Are you saying it's changed in the last month?

So give them a random dob then. Why are you making a mountain out of a mole hill?

You don't have to give it. There's no minimum age to own a car, simply a minimum age to drive one on public roads. A three-year-old could own a Rolls-Royce and employ a chauffeur. Not that many do, I suspect.
