Wheel damage when changing tyres
Discussion
A question for tyre fitters really...
Is it possibly to damage the rim of an alloy wheel when changing a tyre, if rim guards are used.
I have just had new tyres and there is same damage to the lacquer that i would swear wasn't there before. The garage owner was very reasonable and came out to have a look, but he said it was 100% impossible for damage to be caused to the rim of the wheel when a rim guard was in place.
I obviously could't be 100% sure that the damage wasn't there before the tyres were changed... although i would say 95% sure. The damage isn't a rotational type scuff from kerbing, it just looks like laquer damage.
The damage isn't massive and i can live with it / chalk it up to experience, but its just when he said "100% now way..." I was not so sure!
Also, does any tyre fitter, anywhere, ever clean the grunge off the rim that is used to fit the tyre?

If I have nice un marked wheels I always use Kwik fit.
They use lever less machines and have always done a good job, I guess you have the back up of a large company if something goes wrong and they sort the issue.
Price wise for 2 rear potenzas on the z4 it was only £20 more than if I bought the tyres and had them fitted at an indipendant.

Not true in the slightest! I won't name and shame in my post, and obviously the fact that I quoted you is purely coincidental...They use lever less machines and have always done a good job, I guess you have the back up of a large company if something goes wrong and they sort the issue.
Recently had a tyre bulge after hitting a pothole - it was Sunday so had to go to GarageX. Took photo of the wheel/tyre for a council claim 10 minutes before arriving at GarageX.
I was sitting in the waiting room and saw the fitter drop my wheel from the top of the ramp. It fell face-first, chipped/cracked the paint and scraped the red paint from their floor into it.
It literally could not have been more obvious that they caused the damage - the guy even admitted dropping the wheel but said the damage was already there before (yes - the red paint from their floor)! I had photo evidence, I had their "condition report" showing there was no damage on the wheels... DIDN'T BLOODY MATTER! They couldn't care less, after being fobbed off by the branch staff, manager, regional manager and customer service for over a month I gave up. They know I'm not going to go to small claims court over such a small thing, so they don't care.
If you think you're being cautious by going to GarageX, then think again...
always take detailed pics on arrival at the tyre place and inspect before you sign off on the job is the hard lesson I learned.
Had one of Black Circles premium centres fit a set. On arrival wheels were inspected by garage and any damage marked on a sheet.
The wheels had some minor marks on them looked like blonde hair on the rim from where I personally changed the first set of tyres. so damage was marked on the sheet.
When I came to collect the car it was parked over the road in their overflow car park that I had to be guided to as it was not even in view. Anyway into the office They tell me job done fine sign here n here, here are your keys car is over there have a nice day.
As I'm walking up to the car I can see from 50 yards off they have wrecked the wheels. about 1/3 of each rim with a thick gouge around it, through the lacquer and paint and taken some of the metal off. I marched straight back to the tyre place and showed them the issue. They deny (obviously) They eventually get Black circles on the phone who immediately take the garages side and call me a liar.
Anyway ended up with about a month of back and forth emails and phone calls with Black circles lying through their teeth and accusing me of making stuff up.
Tried getting hold of management at Black circles but they wouldnt speak to me.
They kept telling me that the sheet says there is damage there already so you are talking pish. I tried explaining even using photos to illustrate that yes there was damage there but it was like the equivalent of taking your car in to a garage with a stone chip on the bonnet and picking it up with the front smashed in and nothing being done about it as damage was there mate.
They eventually came to understand/ gave in and offer £20 towards each wheel being refurbed but only if I showed them the invoice for the work being done.
So their offer was to contribute £80 if I went out and spent about £250 that I wouldnt have spent in the first place. So that set of tyres cost considerably more than if I had used bloody ATS.
Luckily now a friend of mine has his own place and he knows how to look after a wheel as he used to work in the best refurb place round here.

When having tyres changed I remove the locking wheel nut to stop the tyre monkeys using an air gun on it, and I take a picture of the wheel to show the condition.
I only do this because I had a nut ruined the past, and alloys scratched.
Take the center caps off too, they seem unable to push them back on without snapping all the fI only do this because I had a nut ruined the past, and alloys scratched.
