I`m a serial car changer but genuinely don't want to be. I`m working my way through all sorts of makes and models and having reached a particular `goal` after researching them to death and buying the best example I can, I let it go. I've lost count of the times I've thought "This is a keeper" and last year I bought my first Porsche. A 997.2 C4S with 11k on the clock (and a rare manual). I swore I wouldn't sell it. 7 months it lasted.

I`ve now got into bikes and the whole novelty has taken me in and I`m hooked. Charging around on a 125 is great fun but have an appetite for more but I've hit a stumbling block. I actually don't want to sell my car to fund some fancy bikes.

I now have a bona fide excuse now to sell and go off in a completely different and exciting direction and for some reason can't. I have been offered good money on more than one occasion and refused. weeping WTF?

I`m interested in what makes owners keep a certain machine. Has anyone ever struggled to let go of a car and what was it and why?

An E46 M3. Every time I lift the dust sheet on it I'm reminded how I like pretty much everything about it, and none of the newer models tempt me.

I also still have one of my first cars - a Mk3 Fiesta - that I've spent a silly amount on but haven't used in years, yet I could never let it go.

Keeping either makes zero sense, but there you go smile

My old 911 now, had it nine years. Spent loads on the upkeep and to improve it.As I work away, alot came very close to selling few months ago.

I am still thinking, was it the right move price not?
I had a good offer from a dealer as well.
I knew he would, have added a good twenty on top.
One reason what could take the cars place?I could never afford another later on. Also the condition would be nowhere near the same as my car now. Value is high never going to drop to under 20k again. No matter what happens.

Sometimes cars become part of your family in a funny way.Memories trips to lemans etc.
The only way, I would sell it would have to be a silly offer to temp me.

A friend of mine had a Mk2 Escort. Rebuilt it himself over several years and knew every nut bolt and screw. He said he'd never sell it and he'd be buried in it but was continually being harassed to sell. A unknown young guy turned up a couple of months ago and offered £25k. My friend thinking it was a wind up agreed to sell. Young guy turned up 3 days later with the cash.
The deal hesitantly went through and the seller was left scratching his head not entirely sure if he did the right thing. Usually the `silly offer` thing does it.

I've owned my Monaro for 10 years and keep it mainly because I've invested so much time and a very significant sum of money to get it the way it is. To sell it would feel like throwing away that investment and I know there's nothing I could really replace it with. They have an old school charm that gets under your skin and even now every trip feels like an event.

Hi mate. If you ever do want to sell the Porsche contact a specialist and see if they will sell it for you but with a cut.

This is how I sell my cars. Made myself £4,000 more even with the garage wanting a £1,000 selling fee.

They can offer the buyer finance which a private seller can not.

If the car does not sell you take it back.

Both myself and the dealer were happy.

Why allow a dealer to put £20,000 onto your pride and joy biggrin

My 1989 BMW E30 325 sport, I bought it in 1994 from a family friend and it's going nowhere.

This I get and as you say, replace something like that with what? Something new and bling? (until the next model comes out and renders your current version as the `old model`)

This. Absolutely loved it. Would never sell it, was so adamant about it I crashed it into a lamppost and wrote it off instead.

After seeing the picture of your Porsche no wonder you would never consider selling it.

WOW.

Thanks, looked at twelve before this one. It took a four year search.

My S2000 smile

It may be the most unreliable car ive owned, been on a low loaded 5 times in 18 months and 8K miles. (including all the way back from Austria).

But when all working is just so great to drive.

I cant think of anything else for the same price point that will give the same driving pleasure smile

I bought a Maserati 6 months ago, I wanted a quattroporte but funds were tight so I went for a 4200, now I can afford a QP so I put it up for sale, went on holiday for a week, came back, took it out for a drive and cancelled the advert , that exhaust note is intoxicating

Bought it in November 2007 and it is a permanent member of the garage.
