What's the concensus on private number plates?

I've had one on for the last 10 years, recently put it onto retention (due to new car) and can't help but feel the car looks nicer with it's standard plate on.

Have private registrations become a bit chavvy?

I think it comes down to the type of plate, a dateless plate on your p&j and it's fine.

The chaviness is when you get illegally spaced characters on an illegal pressed/non GB plate. Subsequently these plates are always a st representation of what they are meant to say.

I have considered buying a private plate a few times but would only do it if it had a personal meaning or was an actual spelling of something.

If it's something brilliant like B055 KEV or 573VE D or something clever using the screws to alter numbers then we'll let you off, otherwise just no. I think that's the general consensus round here.

Whenever I see ones with 'BO55' at the beginning, I always think to myself there must be something mentally wrong with the owner. hehe

I'd have a private plate, but only one with four or fewer characters.

Maybe it's too early in the morning for me and you're being sarcastic - if so I apologise. But there's nothing brilliant or clever about chavvy number plates like 573VE D or those with misplaced screws or incorrect font - you just look like a .

Private number plates or all types are perfectly acceptable, especially the dateless ones (not including NI plates). Anything 5 characters or less are great.

It's a shame the DVLA seem to encourage the sad mentality of altering plates by clearly encouraging people to buy ones that only make (half) sense when they are amended illegally.

All down to taste & unfortunately not everyone has this.

Personally i hate with a passion all the incorrectly spaced ones, as i think it looks pathetic & of course it's also illegal. Not a huge fan of the BO55 plates either as smacks of small willy syndrome. The others i'm not a fan of, but this is likely just me are the X5/6/M5 etc. plates on said vehicles, as it's kind of obvious you're driving an X5 etc. & what do you do when you then buy a Merc ML, drive it with the X5 plate.

Lastly & again a personal gripe are the RS6 plates (R56) or (RS6 ****).

I have as per my forum ID & it's been on my cars since 2001. The first 2 symbols have no real relevance & the last 3 are my initials. I used to have W7 also, but some ar$e ferret decided that despite agreeing i could have it back when he sold the car, he then tried to sell my plate back to me (lesson learned). I paid DVLA £399 for each so was kind of a bargain to secure the pair, despite losing one of them.

I was browsing plates the other day and thought to myself - In 10 years time will we have number plates?

There will always have to be some sort of way to identify a car, maybe all cars will be tracked without the need for plates?

If that happens, does a number plate become worthless overnight?

In short, there's definitely no consensus! Some love them, some hate them.

I personally just dont get them. I know what my name/initials are so neither need an expensive reminder or to let other roadgoing strangers know.

I can only just about remember the reg numbers on my cars, to me theyre just a way of the police/dvla identifying my car, I dont notice them on anyone else's car.

Ive wondered this same thing ... the number plate as we know it will probably exist until the cars they are on cease to exist by will be superceded on newer vehicles with other forms of identification

I would therefore assume that over a period of time they will likley increase with rarity as current cars disappear off the roads and then landslide into worthlessness as rarity overtakes everything else

I have a handful of plates - none worth more than £2k - thats what ive been offered by a real person to buy one off me, not one of these shyster reseller companies 'offering top $'

Interesting comments. Thanks.

Mine is a letter number letter letter letter one. It's legally spaced etc and spells my initials.

It seems everyone has one these days for £250 and a bit naff. I'm thinking of binning it.

I've had it for 10 years and may miss it, though.

I like them if they're car specific:

Ferrari had 328 GTS

Porsche had THE 944 S

Cool.

BO55 plates are bad but I have more hatred fro the K155 plates.

Saw K155 MEX a while ago. It was of course spaced as K155 ME X.

It was hard not to flag them down and punch them in the face.

I have one, bought it a year ago but have yet to put it on because of the hassle. I live in an area with permits with a limited number of vehicle changes allowed (2 iirc). Will be putting it on once I change car though.

What are people's opinions on wanting/using a private number plate to hide the year of the car though? I know someone who put it on their ML and it has pretty much everyone fooled; being the only 'car enthusiast', I was the only one to pick up on the year. Everyone else thought it was much younger than it was (a MY08 '58)

You mean the only one who could be bothered to look it up on the internet to catch someone out.
