I know people have different methods of covering up their number plates when selling a vehicle, t-towels/rags, people/animals getting in the way, some people just use the old fashioned method of photoshop or some other editor.

But i like this guys method as he must have been by himself.

when i was in the market for a used car a few months ago, i kept seeing people doing this sort of thing and it put me off every time. what are they hiding? the mot history? HPI checks? you can't find much personal information with the registration can you?

Yes more off putting than crappy pics, and same as POA , frustrating if its something a bit rare otherwise I just look at the next one with a visible plate...

You do realise that people do this to internet photos to avoid their car being cloned?

Stolen red Audi TT, no problem just pop onto AT with the model and colour and hey presto 1 set of ebay 'show plates' later and you can sell or use the car as you wish with all hassle being directed at the legal owner of the plate.

Er, you could do that by walking past any car in the street?

Not if it's something unusual, or just a rare colour.

I don't bother doing it myself, but I understand why people do.

And you'd have to find one in the exact model/colour/year, AT & PH are instant databases with a few keywords.

It stops the resident forum tyre kickers falling over themselves to post up the MOT history and point out that in 1997 there was an advisory for a brake imbalance, deem it ruined and swing in to full on Mike Brewer mode and post up a figure about a quarter of the asking price. Utterly does my box in that sort of crap so yes, I'd cover my plates and if somebody is interested enough then they'll have no issues emailing or calling to discuss and then I'd be happy to disclose any information asked. Just cannot be arsed with the idiots who have nothing better to do than fire your plate in to every car buying site, MOT history and MID before frothing at the mouth and proudly plastering their finds all over your for sale post, turning it in to a general discussion about the price of cheese, why the A4 Avant is a better choice and if it was blue, 700 miles closer and a diesel then they'd buy it.

Looks incredibly dodgy... I mean why use a finger? Looks like he's giving a one fingered salute to the buyer.

I mean if he cant use MSPaint to put a box over it, he's pretty damn computer illiterate. It would look less dodgy if he'd use Instacrap to put a dogs tongue over it as chances are he was taking pictures on his phone anyway.

I think his ire is directed at the car. It is clearly a lemon - do not buy.

Is that really the description?

Because it's a 51 plate, not a 06 or 56 plate, model designation A4 (clearly in photo) and WX51CUH has 149,308 miles on it as of August this year.

This kind of thing is going to drive away buyers. He's going to be wondering why no-ones buying his A6 for weeks.

Wouldn't consider viewing or event talking to the seller of any car unless I could have the registration beforehand.

So you'd never consider a car like this nor pick up the phone to discuss it ????
