I think I understand the rationale behind most of the modifications made to standard road cars from an aesthetic and performance point of view. Big bore exhaust, bigger / wider wheels / bodykits / stickers and even crazy camber set ups can be explained by "because race car."

However, I have noticed that wind deflectors are becoming ubiquitous on the "scene" and I'm struggling to work out why? Would someone care to enlighten me? Much obliged...

The "I like to be unique by modding my car in the same fashion as everybody else" scene.

Their main use is to make things less blustery / wet when raining if you have your window open a bit.

I don't get it myself, just use the air conditioning.

Usually accompanied by blacked out windows, black wheels and "4G" number plates.

At least it's not the 90's any more and these mods can be removed no bother!

I used to have Heko wind deflectors for functional purposes but I binned them last year when all the chavs started putting them on their cars.

It's a generation thing; if you have to ask you will never know.

Just too old to understand the youth smile

Think it falls into the same category as the bonnet bra, they don't seem as popular as they used to be, maybe the bra owners have matured to wind deflectors...never understood the bra thing either. Leave them on all the time and they ruin your paintwork, kind of goes against the original function.

I have considered wind deflectors myself, but for the functionality of them, I like to drive with a window open, makes me feel free!!

That said, the "scene" has certainly put me off the idea, as I get older I am trying to move away from any scene links, it's hard enough trying not to look like a drug dealer driving a WRX at the best of times, never mind if I get linked to a "scene".

I've seen this combination on Land Rovers before. Wind deflectors and air vents.

^^^ This for me... even in winter I like to get a bit of fresh air in the car.

I probably wouldn't have bothered myself, but the previous owner fitted them. Whether I would fit a set to a future car depends on what car it is. They look ok on mine (Mk3 Focus ST), but I don't think would suit my wife's MINI.

Looks like a train window...

Guess it allows your dog to breath without the risk of some scrote popping his arm in your window when you are shopping in Waitrose.

Exactly this. My import pajero has massive wind deflectors from the late 90's before they were "nonce scene" cool.

They are quite useful as rain deflectors at drive throughs as many drive throughs here dont have a roof or rain deflector over the pay and pick up windows.

I've always associated them with French cars - in the 1980s they were ubiquitous there, due to the hot summers and lack of a/c in those days. Japan is similarly afflicted so it makes sense they would have been popular there too.

OP, a lot of "scene" mods aren't so much scene as rather people on the scene who've run out of other things to do. Also wind deflectors are cheap and require no technical ability or tools to fit, hence are popular for people who wouldn't be able to do something more involved.

I wouldn't have them as I think they look gash, but I'm not a fan of visual mods on modern cars (which is totally at odds with the fact I love kustoms, rods and restomods)

Don't need a dog for dogging.

Didn't know you had an Evo. Do you have a readers ride thread on it? Always wanted one.
