Insurance Hikes

Is it just me or has car insurance gone through the roof recently?
I am trying to insure my Audi S5, 40 years old, 14 years NCD, 3 points and 1 none fault accident 4 years ago. I was paying just under £500 a year and my renewal has more than doubled! Shopping around, the absolute best quote I've had is for £470 and that is with a Black box fitted (not likely!). I live in a nice area and have never claimed in my life. Are others finding similar results?

Must be something specific with either your car or your location. I'm 41 and just insured my 69 plate mustang GT with declared mods for £303 fully comp protected NCB.I am trying to insure my Audi S5, 40 years old, 14 years NCD, 3 points and 1 none fault accident 4 years ago. I'd be tempted to have a play on the comparison sites to see which element of your quote is pushing it up so much. I'd start with location as it might well be a 'nice' area to live but perhaps car insurance claims suggest otherwise? Not suggesting you get a policy with an incorrect address, rather to understand what the issue is, the location or the car!

I’ve just renewed mine, also S5, a little older than you, mines £30 less than last year £296!… the first time ever I think that my renewal was less than the previous year.I am trying to insure my Audi S5, 40 years old, 14 years NCD, 3 points and 1 none fault accident 4 years ago. I'm expecting this next year. I got my i30N insured in March at 45, with full NCB and clean license, with business use for both me and Mrs Limpet, for £198! OK we live in rural Dorset, but I always thought three figure premiums starting with a 1 were something from ancient history.
A lot of i30Ns will have been crashed or nicked since then.

Home Insurance doesn't make much money at the moment and will likely increase 20-40% in the next 3 years.
Motor is in a slightly better position, but the changes in January regarding quotes to new/renewals will push prices up - this will be slow and steady, but it's the only outcome of the legislation.
For my sins, I spent my day yesterday at a conference discussing insurance challenges!

You need to be a fool or a genius to try to understand the logic behind insurance quotes.
We've had all our vehicles insured through the company that sounds a bit like "Dalek wine" for years, every year we play the game ...they quote high, I get alternatives and call them back, they drop their quote to an acceptable level.
Not this year, we got a quote on the Micra runaround, 160SR, used by everyone but in my wife's name. Kids are another year older so it should have been cheaper... No, almost doubled from £250 to almost £500, got other far cheaper quotes but DL wouldn't move so we went with someone else for the first time in years. Two weeks later we get a quote on the Berlingo van, again used by everyone but in my name. £180, £60 less than last year and cheaper than any of the comparison sites, I just went with it. Got the Shogun quote in today...half of last years £500...WTF

95% of the time straight auto renewal prices are a lot higher than the year before.
Insurance companies are hoping you will just allow a policy to auto renew without really checking the price, or that you cant be bothered to go through the rigmarole of phoning around for new quotes EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
really s
tty system if you ask me. insurers dont care at all about loyal customers or repeat business - that said, there are only a handful of different insurers groups with a few different brands of insurance, so even if you think you're saving money by going somewhere else, chances are the same underwriter is getting your money again.

Law change coming in will put a stop to that!Insurance companies are hoping you will just allow a policy to auto renew without really checking the price, or that you cant be bothered to go through the rigmarole of phoning around for new quotes EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

It won't. Insurance companies will simply cease offering first year discounts so those that used to shop around won't get the same perceived savings they once used to get whilst those who just sat back and auto-renewed won't see any difference!
It's like when the law changed to stop discriminating against male drivers, campaigners stated that male drivers will see policies reduce as they could no longer be discriminated against. Only what actually happened was females ended up paying more!
My recent renewal for my RRS was whopping. Over £850! I've never paid that much, even in my teenage years - and I'm an old fart now with NCD running back to the late 1980's. (So, five years in insurance company speak
)
Some clicking about with the opera bloke and the meerkats have brought the cost down by over £500 which is more palatable, although I still consider that to be expensive.

Me: 64 years old, retired.
Licence held for 40 years
20 years NCB
No accidents
No claims
Recent 3 points on licence (speeding-35 in a 40, fair cop.)
Car:
18 year old Ford Focus, bog standard, no mods.
Recent insurance costs-£350 per annum.
New quote: £1300+.................
Now I know insurance costs have recently risen but shirley that can't be right???
Tried a few comparison sites but they are in in the same ball park.
Insurance company says (with fingers in ears), 'rising costs, 3 points on licence' etc etc

Older cars can be expensive to insure. Let passenger protection, less pedestrian protection. And older cars (not classic cars, but older mundane cars) have a higher claim rate than newer cars. Injury claims are a big driver of motor insurance rates. Licence held for 40 years
