Recommended breakdown cover?
Discussion
It's been ages since i've had any breakdown cover & I have a few big driving trips planned so thought i'd get some. Does anyone have any recommendations - best classic friendly companies, cheapest way to buy etc, potentially with European cover?
All my cars are fairly old/modern classics, & am not really interested in home start etc. My main concern is getting a service where me/my car is quickly transported back home no matter how far it is if something serious goes wrong - major component failure;engine/gearbox/drivetrain etc - so i'm not left stranded.
IIRC getting European cover that covered the full repatriation costs for older car was tricky.

If you buy AA/RAC/Green Flag, do so through Quidco/TopCashBack to effectively make it half price.
A full bells and whistles Home Start/Breakdown/Recovery/Relay/Onward Trave/Hotel/Hire Car could be £300, but you'll get around half that in cashback making the effective cost £150 ish.
At renewal cancel and join a competitor via cashback sites. I would normally recommend Autoaid for around £60, but I think there are age restrictions on the cars.

I used them on my 28 year old VW T4 with no issues.
Would still be using them if I didn't get breakdown through our joint account.
Don’t most bank accounts come with it as part of a bundle of stuff for the monthly fee?
I’ve not bought breakdown cover for 20 years. I’ve used it (AA) several times and it’s been great. The account includes home emergency cover which again has been useful.
This is with a normal high street bank, not some posh private bank.

Ive been with axa for years and used them several times for 300+ mile trips to get my car home. If its local I know people to just get a lift or get another of my cars with trailer.
Broken down with trailer twice and had it recovered as well. If they cant get you home same day they get me a courtesy car to drive home in and car is generally dropped off next day.
Never waited over 2 hours to be picked up as they just ring local companies to fetch you.

I have Green Flag via my bank account and as they generally contract out to local companies, I have always been recovered in the few times I have needed them really quick. Last example was a break down due to a failing alternator on an A road, 20 miles from home at 1600 on a Friday. I did manage to make it to lay bye and a local firm came out, couldn't fix it at the road side and had me recovered to a garage of my choice in around 1hr40 minutes.I was very impressed.
Check the T&C's of some providers as some have an age of car clause in them especially abroad.
I have had both AA and RAC in the past but in my experience Green Flag have been the best.

I got full cover (including European cover) through my insurance company for £99. This is for my 40 year old T25.
I took it out 3 months after renewing my insurance as my van had been off the road with a knackered gearbox.
Worth trying your insurance company.
Ps, my insurance is through Just Kampers, who have been excellent (but never claimed through......)

LV Britannia Rescue.
Best provider with "What Car" last year. was with Green Flag but, after going through the comparisons sites, They wanted £61 for a year. LV- £26!
This doesn't include homestart -don't need it but, does include national recovery and onward travel, with no excess.
That's for a 12 year old MPV

I am with a private bank and the idea of paying a monthly or annual fee in order to deposit money with them is utterly bonkers to me.I’ve not bought breakdown cover for 20 years. YMMV and probably does.
