We have them in Yorkshire too. They seem to be an attempt to create the visual impression of a speed hump.

They always put me in mind of those fake road features (tunnels, holes in the ground etc) that Wile E Coyote used to use to catch Roadrunner.

A lot of the real speed humps around me have the same markings painted on them. In some places they even alternate between real ones and fake ones.

That's what I actually thought they were on initial glance so guess they're designed to trick you to slow down. Quite a clever idea if they work and none of the inconvenience of an actual hump. smile

Yep, I've always thought we have a real shortage of road signage in this country. Something else to gawp at rather than those pesky pedestrians who might be about to step out in front of you.

On a similar vane, I find these 3d crossings quite interesting.
Although like the ‘humps’ above, once you know, you know…

Guess it's to get you to slow down. Might not work after the first time but if someone else in front of you isn't aware, you'll be forced to slow down, too.

Those lines getting closer together as you approach a roundabout have never worked for me. Perhaps because I’m looking ahead and not at the road surface two yards in front of me.

I’ve never seen this sort of thing. Clever to use psychological means to control behaviour.

And despite knowing they are fake you still have to battle your subconscious that is always trying to keep you ‘safe’.
