Sadiq Khan extending ULEZ zones
Discussion
I don't really know where to post this subject, but it will affect many people if it actually happens. In my local paper today, I read that Sadiq Khan plans to extend the ULEZ zone to Dartford in Kent, which would mean people having to fork out an extra £12.50 a day to drive there. As my wife currently works in Dartford, that would be over £60 a week extra just to drive to work, say £260 per month, this on top of the £120 in fuel per month. Why are we letting politicians get away with this rubbish? There has to be a point where people just snap and say "NO".
This is going to hurt people on low wages, not those earning London rates of pay. There was me imagining the Labour party were all about making things better for poorer people, instead of taxing the f
k out of us.

Because Khan is a Khant!
When he was my MP I wrote to him about the rapidly rising cost of parking permits in Wandsworth and the armies of blokes on mopeds dishing out tickets to those of us unlucky enough to not find spaces near our homes and had not got up at 8am to shift our cars.
It used to be free to park.
He basically said it was to make up for the low council tax.
Apparently the current ULEZ, that forced me to get rid of my much loved daily, owned for 25 years, has not turned into the money maker he had hoped.
It's about the cash not cleaning the air.

Or just buy ULEZ compliant car (most petrol from 2006) and pay £0 per year ?
Do you seriously think the majority of people living or working in these areas can afford to do that? Oh, maybe they should just give up going to work if it is too expensive, maybe stop buying other things to fund this extra tax?croyde said:

I totally agree with all of that, particularly your last point. When he was my MP I wrote to him about the rapidly rising cost of parking permits in Wandsworth and the armies of blokes on mopeds dishing out tickets to those of us unlucky enough to not find spaces near our homes and had not got up at 8am to shift our cars.

don't confuse cost with cashflow. You can get a 2006 ULEZ car for a couple of grand, by your calculations £240 a month is the cost of ULEZ, that equates to a bank loan of £11520 over 4 years. So you could half that amount and get a bank loan for £6k. And buy the car. I'd do it just to piss Khan off. I have not included the value of your swapper either.

If you can't afford that you can't afford a car anyway, so it's irrelevant.

Because people only care when it affects them. You weren't fighting for the people who are already in the zones, and people outside the proposed new zones won't care about your plight.Krikkit said:
Yes, if they already have a car.

I bought an ULEZ compliant car for £400. Good service history, one owner who hardly drove it, MOT.You can get a perfectly serviceable car in petrol and 2006-on form for less than a thousand quid. If you can't afford that you can't afford a car anyway, so it's irrelevant.
A day later it was in the garage, 2 weeks later it was fixed, sort of, for £800.
It's a lottery that I knew I wouldn't have had to deal with if I'd kept my non ULEZ compliant car that I had bought in 1999 and looked after.
Not very green to get rid of a perfectly working car in order to buy another.
The restriction should never have been invoked on cars already owned but only on cars that were still to be bought.
Older cars on the road would still have become a minority in a less financially painful way to the owners.
Am I right in saying that if it is actually going ahead the ULEZ will be the same map as the current LEZ: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/low-emission-zone...

Yes, it covers the whole of Greater London, I am four roads in from the boundary. I currently drive a Euro 4 diesel, so by August 2023 I will need to replace this with a Euro 4+ petrol car, otherwise I will have to pay £12.50 every single time I want to use my car.Luckily my car is a shed so it isn't any great hardship, but I would be pretty annoyed if I was driving around in a pre 2015 Euro 5 Diesel.

As you have shown it's not even expensive to buy a compliant car.
As someone who worked in London for 30 years I welcome anything that cleans the air up a bit.
I do think pushing it out to dartford is too much though. It's simply not as densely populated that far out.
Long running thread on the changes to the London ULEZ and the charges is here:
