Plate retention

I’ve just tried to put my reg plate on retention but it said I couldn’t do it online I have to post my documents. My question is can I now sell my car because of the reg plates??? I’m confused. Thanks for any feedback

What you describe only usually happens if you have had a gap in your car tax.

Otherwise, you cam d9 it online.

You can sell the car with the plate it current has, but that plate will transfer “ownership” to whoever buys the car.

If you want to keep the plate, you’ll need to put in on retention via a postal application, then wait for the new V5 to come back. Once that arrives, you can assign the original reg back to the car and sell it. Last time I did a postal application, I had the new V5 within about 2.5 weeks as I recall, that was around Feb/March this year.

Thanks for your reply. Sod’s law we had someone to come & buy it but they had to leave because we wasn’t sure what to do.
