Very odd experience, took my wife’s car to a main dealer today for a service, asked them specifically not to change any settings in the car to which they assured me they wouldn’t.

When given back to me, virtually everything has been changed - for the life of me I can’t get it all back as it was despite hours of fighting with it on the way home.

I asked at the time to speak to the guy who changed everything and ask him to put it all back but they said they had no way of knowing who it was. (Rather worrying to not have a record of who has access to which cars, but anyway).

Emailed the dealer manager (we just bought a new car from them two weeks ago: not this one) to ask for an explanation, all that was really needed was an apology and a message to say they would ask their staff to honour reasonable customer requests, but instead get a message back saying that changing all the settings and not putting them back is completely acceptable and they would do it again in the future. In other words, they don’t give a monkeys about customer wishes.

Really, really odd and in my mind, unbelievably arrogant

Or am I expecting too much?

Should dealers just ignore their paying clients?

Cheers

When you say the dealership has changed the settings do you mean they've moved the drivers seat to a different position or deleted any customised coding you've had done to your car?

If its the latter then the dealership should have been made aware of this by you as manufacturer software updates applied will wipe out any customisation coding you've had done. If its the former, then that's acceptable.

How many settings does the car have? I think some stuff is reset to factory if they plug the car in for any updates IIRC.

I am struggling to think of any settings in a car that could be changed that would annoy me enough to fire off an email to a dealer.

That said cars get a lot of software/firmware updates during services so it's possible it was unavoidable (just look at the various forums where people complain about losing remaps etc after an ECU update during a service)

Is it that they retuned the radio to Heart? I'd be flipping fuming if that were the case.

My F31 was coded to have 5 flashes for the one-touch indicators, but when I got it back it was only doing 3.

Tried to recode it back to 5, but the options listed were now only 1 or 3.

Didn't even think to berate the dealership about it though wink

Yep, this. It's quite normal for dealers to do minor software updates come service-time, and even these minor updates can require a complete flash of some of the car's systems. My old BMW dealer always asked if I'd remembered to back my settings up to USB when I dropped it off.

If it's some unofficial coding that's been wiped then tough luck, but it's only a matter of uploading the data again smile

This happened to me, too, no dice with recoding either. Never managed to get it back to the 5 smile

It wasn’t coding, but in moving it 50 yards they managed to close all the air vents, lay the drivers seat flat on the floor, push front passenger seat so far forwards you would need to be a midget to get in, adjust the drivers seat lumbar support (I think!), recline the backrest so you sit in it and look at the ceiling, move all three mirrors, put the heating on full blast, and goodness only knows what else.

With all the changes they made it’s impossible to get everything back to how it was as for the life of me I can’t figure out exactly what they have done.

A lovely drive there this morning but a painful nightmare to get home.

As I said, maybe I am expecting too much, but simple courtesy of returning stuff to how it was would be nice

And yes ! Bloody Heart WAS on the radio !!! Hahaha

I think it's quite time-consuming for dealers to take backups of user settings for every car they work on.

Yes, it's rather strange that they didn't at least give you a reason (such as the above) and politely advise you to make a backup of your settings in future, assuming this is possible of course.

Odd thread.
Surely it would take you longer to email a complaint than it would to readjust things.

It took my wife over two hours to get everything how she wanted it, and I have no way of getting it back to how it all was, but I do know what you mean. Sadly it’s impossible to do it without knowing what they changed - and they won’t tell me

I mean yes it does seem odd that they have actively changed loads of stuff around, almost seems like they've done it on purpose in contrast to you specifically asking them not to.

That said, it doesn't sound like these aren't rectifiable, just a bit of a faff. Yes sometimes we find that sweet spot on the mirrors and seats etc. but as you use the car you'll tweak things here and there and it'll be fine. Sounds to me things like the heating, vents and radio are ten second tasks, just need to get the ergonomics sorted.

Seems odd to be so perturbed I must say. Is there more context to this? As in I could understand someone with a disability perhaps struggling and not wanting things adjusted if they could help it.

I bet the traffic on the way home was all in a different position as well. Nightmare to cope with.
