Speed of private plate transfer
Discussion
Apologies - I used the search function but didn't find an answer for my situation.
We bought a replacement vehicle a few weeks ago, went on holiday the next day and picking up the pieces now. New V5 has arrived for the replacement and temporary insurance runs out for it this Saturday.
Plan is to change the private plate from the current car this Friday to the new via DVLA online. Am I right in saying we can put the plate on retention for the £80 fee then, as soon as the retention code/certificate arrives in our inbox (almost immediately I've read?) and then assign it to the replacement car in a matter of minutes?
This would mean I could change insurances for the new car, put the old on a temp insurance while waiting for the V5 to then sell when it arrives. Will this work? Trying to cut down on 'administration fees' the insurance company loves to dish out.
Thanks in advance.

If you do it online the retention is immediate as is fitting new plates , we have just done it and had the original plates for the car ,so refitted them straight away ,if you don't have plates ready ,the replacement reg must be fitted ASAP
Brilliant. Thanks to both replies - just what I needed to know. Yes. I've still got original plates for the car the private plate will be removed from. Cheers
I've just taken my plate off my car which I have since sold to put it on a bike, I got an email straight away to say you can put old plate back on car, and in that email there was a retention code.
Bike dealer are saying they can use that code but also need the certificate, guessing they still come through the post?

Word of warning last time I did a transfer the online dvla tool wouldn't let me do the transfer I had to send it in manually.
I asked why and they wouldn't tell me.
Normally the first thing that triggers this is that the car has not been continually taxed for x years (off the top of my head, I'm going to say 5 years). If that happens the transfer has to be done manually by a non existent DVLA worker. LI asked why and they wouldn't tell me.

I found that whilst changing plates on already registered vehicles was essentially “instant” - if a dealer needs the paperwork to register a new vehicle, we had to wait for, well, the paperwork. If I read your opening post correctly you wish to do a 2 stage change:
1) Remove the plate from an existing car, and:
2) Apply it to another car.
Part 1 is instant when done online.
Part 2 you have to wait for the physical retention certificate to arrive in the post because you need the certificate number. This is not included in the online email, just the ability to put the plates on the car you have removed it from.

I got my certificate number on the email the other day telling me to put the old plate back on. The procedure from one vehicle to another is now convoluted due to the insistence on everything being done in Swansea.
In t'old days when there were DVLA offices, you could fill in a form to transfer the registration straight from one car to another. However, you then had to surrender and wait for 2 replacement V5c documents to come from Swansea anyway.
Whisper it but it's been £80 for 30 years.... Proves it's an admin fee and not the real 'cost')
At least by doing it online, you get notified of the registration immediately. In the early 1990s, DVLA, bizarrely, used to issue an age relevant plate rather than the vehicle's original. Had to buy another set of plates instead of using the old ones.

Ah. That's annoying. So not as seamless as one hoped. Oh well. 1) Remove the plate from an existing car, and:
