...would you be happy with if it was mandated that cars were to be restricted?

For years manufacturers limited their cars top speeds to 155mph, seen as adequate for blasting down autobahns during these cross-continental jaunts.

More recently there's been a drive towards even higher top speeds - if your range topping supercar wasn't in the 200mph+ club then it didn't cut the mustard.

Even humdrum family transport is generally capable of 120mph.

I think the day is coming when cars will be automatically speed restricted; if and when that does happen what limited top speed would you be happy with?

Personally, it wouldn't bother me if ANY car that I owned in the future was only capable of 100mph; actually 90mph even.

What's your need, your need for speed?

Japanese cars are / were limited to around 112mph and honestly that seems like plenty... I know it seems anti-PH but for what you can actually do on the roads in the UK, why need more?

I do however think speed limits, at least on motorways, should be raised in certain places / conditions.

The issue comes with things like track days and private land use where higher speeds are perfectly justifiable and appropriate..

All new Volvos are limited to 112mph from 2020.

I think the top speed is the statistic of a vehicle that I care about the least.

155 seems ok to me. 112 and I'm not buying the car, I say that as a Volvo owner.

100 seems fine to me, in reality those speeds are rare in the UK (I'm guessing biggrin ) but I'd rather have more low down power (or range) than a requirement for 155mph. Although guess that when self driving stuff comes along maybe top speeds could be much higher?

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Well, that wouldn't put me off buying one.

I wonder if that's affected the sales of their performance variants, like Polestar?

Also, what other manufacturers are likely to follow suit; the idea of a 112mph limited Porsche, Lamborghini or Jag does sound a bit odd.

The Kei class is limited to 85mph, and tbh I find I hardly ever reach that now.

But I don't think there should be speed limiters.

Me neither.

I can't stand the "why would you want to go faster than 70" attitude.

@bigbnn ... Speed limit for the area you are in at the time or a mandatory 70mph limiter???

My daily is limited to 94mph and it doesn't really bother me in the slightest. If I'm being boring and honest, that's probably plenty fast enough for anyone in the UK.

Having said that, my other car can do around 180mph...

On many of the Japanese performance cars of the 90's and early 00's, wasn't the 112mph top speed arbitrary - as in they were really that limited. biggrin

Doing 85 in a kei car is something I want to experience, sounds bananas!

Dependent on country the car is sold in, but for UK 70. Gers way to difficult with variable limits etc. Also an unlimited option for trackdays etc. Obviously this is all a strange discussion, I woukd have no issue with this but neither would it be something I'd seek to do, I was only answering the OP's question.

Would you still want to own it, if it was somehow restricted to...say, 112mph?

It's really fine, no different to driving any other small car at motorway speeds. Most are less noisy than, say, an Aygo.

As long as it automatically removed itself once I got to a track, yes.

In cases where the car isn't electronically limited, I always find it a very interesting statistic - Gives an insight to the aerodynamics of the car when you can see how high (or low, in the case of bricky SUVs) a top speed is returned for a given amount of power.

Rather than limit the overall top speed I would rather new cars limit speed based on where it is.

Surely the modern computers in cars are intelligent enough to know what the speed limit on a road is.

Sick of seeing people doing well over double on 30/40mph roads.

Hopefully it would also be intelligent enough to remove limits when on track.
