Has a drive in a 1l seat arosa yesterday and it was hillarious fun even compared to new smaller cars. i feel incredibly lucky to have started driving when the late 90's cars were the cars around. Before they all went sterile.

Anything really light is usually a laugh. I've got a shed 2013 Peugeot 208 soot chucker that's FAR more fun that it should be, and a shed 2006 Micra 160SR that's genuinely brilliant. Both circa 1 ton cars.

1981 BMW E12 528i. 5 speed car. I bought it from a Jamaican fella here in Dallas who got it from an estate sale. It had sat about 15 years and the tires were shredded. Rats had chewed the battery cable and he wasn't a car guy so he never got it running. I took it to the shop , use a jumper cable for -ve terminal, syphoned whatever fuel was in the system and put fresh fuel in and it started on about 3 cylinders. I used a stethoscope to listen to the injectors and determined which were not clicking and started tapping them with a screw driver until they woke up. Car ran great!

Replaced the tires, brakes , brake hoses and fuel lines and changed the a/c. Aside from being a huge bargain, it was one of the most fun driving cars I've ever owned.

It came with a stack of invoices including $7000 of engine work (including head work) at the local BMW dealer which happened about 3000 miles before it was parked. That's in 1990's money.

When the wife (then girlfriend) was buying her first car back in 2012 I found and bought her a £650 2001 VW Lupo 1.4 8v. It was hilarious fun to drive.

My first car. 68hp and skinny tyres. Lots of fun if embarrassing to turn up in.

I drove a £1500 74k miles 2006 Lexus IS250 last week and the only reason i didn't buy it was because I had no way of really justifying owning another car I don't need. It drove impossibly well for the money. I talked a mate into buying it, absolute bargain.

An is250 isn’t a cheap car might be to but look at the other cars mentioned for an idea of what I meant

I was surprised by the Vauxhall Viva courtesy cars I used to get (modern one), you could tell they were built cheap, but they really put a smile on my face, like a little go cart, surprisingly well equipped too.

My first car was a Ka, and it was very fun and absolutely bulletproof(mine ran without coolant for months), but I feel like it's fairly common knowledge the Ka is a fun car, the Viva I was really expecting a miserable shopping trolley, but it really wasn't.

On the other hand, garage I use now has Citroen C1 courtesy cars, and I hate them(but appreciate being given a courtesy car, better than the bus), they are fun, but they are so cramped and uncomfortable, and they have the worst clutches I've ever used, hate them. The Viva is a much better cheap car in my opinion.

My Ignis Sport. I know they used to get mockingly praised quite a lot on Pistonheads but it really was an enjoyable car to drive. It looked silly too and had recaro seats etc so it felt like a little rally car. I loved it and would highly recommend them to anyone:

Gen 4civic only £250. Still one of my favourite ever cars. Not the fastest, but great handling and superb visibility.
Also had a mk 5 escort estate, £80 no t/t
Needed v little work. Sold a yr later for £250! Had door bins full of fagbuts and 'brown tinted windows' ie cigarette smoke tint!
