If you have a private plate on your car but you don't really want it is there a mechanism for advertising it until someone wants it? Then take it off and do a plate change?

I believe you can return the car to it's original plate, then put the private one on retention whilst you sell it.

Could always just list it on ebay with a description saying it's currently on your car

It's £80 to retain it. No renewal cost any more.

Point is... it means nothing to me and likely nothing to most people. So I don't really want to spend money taking it off the car if nobody wants it. Nevertheless... I would like to sell it if there's a buyer out there. And I'd be doing someone a favour by putting it on the market if it's the plate someone wants.

It's £80 to put a plate a plate on retention for for upto 10 years.

After 10 years it can be renewed for another 10 years for free. The £80 is effectively the assignment fee and is refunded if you decide to give up the plate. If the plate is on retention it can be assigned to a vehicle without any additional cost.

The £25 annual renewal fee was scrapped in 2015.

What's the plate? (Obviously redact where necessary)

So advertise it, and be clear its still on the car, so it wont be an instant purchase. Someone may have the same set of odd initials. Don't expect miracles from eBay etc. The plate brokers will want too much for the negligible value.

As the previous poster said, just advertise it with a note saying it's currently on your car and will be transferred once purchased.

Also make it clear whether the sale price includes the transfer fee.

Or at least what’s the format of the plate? I.e. AB 12, or A1 BCD etc.

Or just use one of the many companies selling number plates as many of the (non DVLA) plates they advertise are still on cars. Or certainly were a few years ago when a friend had his both on the car and for sale.

Didn't know you could put plates on eBay. I'll look at that solution.

Regardless of how you sell it, someone will have to pay the £80 to retain it.

If you don't want the plate. You might as well get it off the car, get it retained and then when/if you sell it you can pass the info straight along.

I wouldn't buy a private plate that was still on a car.

It sold straight away on eBay!

I guess probably to a plate trader.

I'm assuming you've maybe underpriced it a fair bit....hence why I asked what the plate was (roughly), as I expect there are a few of us on here that could have potentially helped given you a value....

If I priced it right it probably would have hung around forever. I'm happy with what I got bearing in mind I paid a similar amount for the whole car.
