I can’t seem to find a definitive answer on this so asking here….

I bought a car first registered in Northern Ireland and it came with an NI plate (obviously) that I’ve grown to really like.

I would like to keep it going forward but can I transfer a “normal” NI plate to another vehicle?

Is the car on a DVLA logbook, with that plate?

If yes. The logbook should include any restrictions as some plates are deemed non transferable. Putting the logbook code in the website and going through the first two plate retention screens will also confirm that.

Thanks for the reply, it certainly looks like I can do it if I want to.

What would happen after that? Would the DVLA simply provide a new registration for the car?

Yes, it would be provided with a registration number of its year of first registration. You'd be assigned it immediately if the process is done online, although a new V5c would take a bit longer.

I'm unsure if it would be a N.I. plate but in any case, it is likely that it will be deemed non-transferable. This was certainly the case when transferring a pre-1963 car registration (I.e., dateless). Otherwise, you could keep doing it. smile

If you have grown to like the plate then it is a ‘cherished plate’.

Ah ok, so you mean the newly allocated plate would be unlikely to be an NI plate? That’s fine, I wouldn’t expect that to be the case and a UK reg would be fine.

I just want to keep the dateless one I have at the moment despite it just being nothing special as such.

Good point, I guess so! It has some consecutive number repetition but other than that, it’s just a bog standard NI plate but I feel like it is “mine” now.

If the car has only ever been registered on that plate, then you take it off, it will probably get a local UK plate rather than NI one.

Slightly different but in 2014 I got the dealer to register my brand new car on my NI cherished plate from new, the dealer was in Middlesborough. Years later when I took it off they gave it a Milton Keynes plate.

Just don't forget the wonderful £80 'Admin' fee you have to pay to remove it each time....

I would still suggest going through the first few steps online, to see if they throw up any unexpected exceptions.
