AMG have now dropped the V8 for a 4 cylinder engine in the C63 for example. Plus countless hybrids and full EVs on the market now too. So the future doesn't look very bright at all in my eyes cars wise.

So are you going to give up on the internal combustion engine? Or are you sticking with an ICE for as long as you can?

Plenty of decent stuff available second hand so no need to buy into this woke nonsense.

Maybe look at different cars and consider getting into bikes. There are loads of options! A Caterham is only 4 cylinders and they are awesome.

Agree and my FIL has one. I thoroughly enjoyed driving it when I had a go in it for sure. It was loud and a proper headturner too.

A Caterham is the right answer. I was starting to feel a little jaded with being a petrolhead - too much traffic, crazy fuel prices and speed cameras everywhere- so I got rid of my 500bhp toy and jumped into a Caterham 420R. Suddenly driving has become fun again.

I’d agree about Caterham, and there are still some other great ICE cars available. I also agree that there’ll be second hand options for a long while yet.

But… it does worry me when my boy (7 and a real petrolhead) asks me about learning to drive and I explain that he might not get to change gear in 10 years’ time

I drove a near 20 year old car and it's fine, I have a 43 year old motorcycle which is also fine.
I think we will become modern classic owners then classic owners if we want to continue to be petrol heads long term

How is Mercedes offering up a 4 banger C63 'woke'? This is just progress.

I for one dislike it but I hardly think its Mercedes trying to be 'woke'.

As for OP's question, yes I will absolutely be petrolhead until I die. It's in my veins.

I'm not really a "petrolhead", but for me the utility/value/performance blend for ICE hasn't been usurped just yet, so I'm staying put. I think eventually it will be though.

As a daily then yes eventually, but then I long ago gave up fun driving on a regular basis for various reasons. Convenience and comfort is more important to me now

At the weekend and for the odd road trip, not a chance!

For me cars these days are a bit like motoring journalism, where I’ve little interest in modern publications, but I’ll regularly revisit some older ones I still have hoarded away

I’m staying out for now but I’m pretty sure I’ll buy one of the new electric Caymans when they are released, assuming they are not limited like GT cars.
As for the present, it doesn’t matter how many cylinders or what the displacement it’s all about fun. I can have as much fun in a 2.0 Z4 as I can in almost anything.

Since I was ten years old I've been reading about amazing cars in magazines etc that I couldn't afford or even drive. All those cool cars are still out there, and now I'm in a position to access quite a few of them. The newest car I've owned to date is a 2007, so still plenty of cool petrol cars that are 'new' to me, plenty of racetracks and road trips to enjoy.

And I personally don't mind EVs either, I'll keep one petrol fun car for the foreseeable future but happy to drive an EV most of the time and interested to see how that develops in terms of range (EQXX) and lightweight drivers' cars (McMurtry Speirling).

More fundamentally, for me it's not a question of 'feeling like giving up being a petrolhead' - I was into cars before I turned two years old, it's hard-wired, it's not something I could really 'give up' even if I wanted to, I don't think.

Why does it have to be one or the other? I’m not obsessed with having the newest thing so the C63 with a 4 cylinder doesn’t bother me, older models with the V8s are still available.

On the flip side I have no issues with EV’s and would happily have one alongside a fun car.

I haven't had much interest, at least from a driving perspective, in new cars for a while but I still find modern cars fascinating from an engineering standpoint and I still enjoy driving older cars.

At this minute I have other priorities (overpaying my mortgage) however once that’s cleared in another 24 payments I’m going to buy some combustion engine cars,

2yr old Range Rover sport for the wife (don’t like the new shape)

And a Mclaren or huracan for me

My work car I don’t care about so if they want me in an ev or whatever that’s upto them (currently a mondeo estate) however for the mileage I do the battery would be wrecked within 2-3yrs

I've just bought an old escort, want to like driving again.

We also have a new mercedes, so nothing against new cars, but there are plenty of there for every taste and situation.

I had a 270hp Westfield, was very quick but not the greatest road car. Its really hard to overtake being so low down and being caught in the rain on a short motorway stint was utterly terrifying.

Motorcycle are great though, you can overtake anything, anytime, anyplace. Much needed for today's traffic to make progress.

I don’t really think high power heavy stuff is the way to go for road fun. My series 1 Elise if perfect for the road, Zenos E10 perfect for the track. They’re cars that you really feel the speed in so ultimate numbers don’t really matter. Being cheap to run and fuel helps as well!

I’d be interested in the thoughts of people from 60s/70s driving and 18/19 year olds….

Do we all get locked in to our favourite models from a certain period of time and are less impressed with new stuff….. I know the rise of EVs and hybrids is very different….. but did people who loved an etype despise an XJS…. A vintage SL for a modern day SL… does a youth look upon the new C63 is awesome where as I see it as a step back.

I’ll always love cars, prefer to race these days but as far as road stuff not many new models interest me- definitely fond of my era (2000s to early 2010s)

Not really.

I’m not fussed about new cars but am happy getting me full from slightly older stuff and I’ll keep buying that stuff until the penalties for doing so are horrendous.

Woke AMG made me laugh- these threads do bring out the snowflakes.

There are so many great cars out there second hand. An incredible range to suit most pockets. My son’s got a 3 grand, 25 year old MX5 which is fantastic fun to drive. I’ve got a 16 year old Boxster that I am about to head off with on a road trip to Italy tomorrow.

And I have a Tesla which is also brilliant at what it does.

We’ve never had it so good.
