No accidents or claims, on maximum NCD, yet a certain navel officer wants to double my premium from last year. That's taking the proverbial.

Any recommendations for multi car insurance providers please?

Been with Direct Line a few years now, so far they are within a few quid of the cheapest of quotes on the comparison sites one or two of which are known for recouping their low rates with high admin fees, i don't expect or ask them to match quotes from companies i wouldn't use.

DL don't feature on the usual comparison sites, they have their own website, not set up fully for multicar as such i believe but the call centre staff have always been very helpful and easy to converse with so worth speaking to them once you have a quote or two and see what they can do for discount for more than one car, we've also put our home insurance their way.

They have also raised my policy by £600! So I was going to have a look around as well.

I’d highly recommend LV personally.

You only know how good an insurance company is if you ever have to make a claim (be it nonfault or fault).

I had a non fault claim with them a few years back and their service was brilliant.

Thanks all.

I was with LV but they won't insure the Bentley.

LV is just a brand now they’re owned by Allianz.

Aviva have tried to up my multi car by another £100 pounds again this year, they did it last year! Mini and a Passat from £560 to £650. I got a quote from Admiral, my home insurers and they want nearly £1000!!!!

So went on compare the market and have gone back to individual quotes and they came up £190 for the Passat and £210 for the mini.

Multi car policies are a rip off….always get quotes every year of they’ll all try and fleece you!

We have been with many companies over the years. Zurich, Churchill, Direct Line, among others. For three years we were with NFU Mutual, for a 335d and a Fabia, because they included GAP insurance and breakdown. Last year we moved to two separate policies with LV= because Go Compare were offering a free £250 excess cover for each, and were cheaper. I find that insurance policies keep a modest increase each year then creep up steeper after about the third or fourth year - testing if you hunt around or are a ‘stayer’. I have the inkling annual mileage is quite key. Putin a high mileage, and you are more exposed to risk, put in a very low mileage, and you may appear as not keeping up on road experience; but who knows!
It is the same old message of searching around, going via comparison and individual sites, not leaving it till the last minute, clearing cookies etc.

My experience also. Never had a quote get within £150 of the price of the individual premiums combined.

With this new law that came in on 01/01/2021 where renewal customers should be offered the same deal as new customers, I've only struggled with renewals on 1 or 2 cars. With every other car (around 12 in total), I've been able to get far better deals on comparison sites.

For example I had 2 cars with Tesco and their renewals went up and weren't competitive, so I went on comparison sites, and "took out new policies" with....Tesco! Apparently they only have to give the lowest renewal price on their Tesco Insurance site and not offers created via comparison sites. With some comparison sites, they forgo some commission to create lower prices, or may quote the same price but with everything included (windscreen, breakdown, personal accident & legal expenses).

For about half a dozen of the cars, I've been surprised that the premium has gone down, but in 5/6 of them, I've still got better prices via comparison sites.

My "inkling" of what's going on is that after 3 or 4 years (or maybe less) they retire the policy you were on and bring in a new one. If you stay on the old policy the cost ramps up.

It used to be obvious when they did this as things would be stripped out, but they're mainly about as basic as they can get now, in order to be competitive.

I've had this happen twice with LV, including this year. They wouldn' budge on a £400 renewal a few months ago when I said a new quote was £100 cheaper. "Take the new policy" I was told in a very conspiritorial way. I asked what the difference was and was told there isn't any - I've looked and the cover appears identical.

Being cynical, you might think this is a way around insurance companies not being able to quote new customers cheaper than existing one, yet this new policy thing has been happening for years. My original LV policy when I opted out of my companyc ar 15yrs ago, was unlimited mileage, foreign use, no loading for points etc etc but the premium became bonkers. They told me it was because they didn't offer it any more.

I had something similar with my Mum's home insurance, which I started helping her with after my Dad died.

She was being charged something like £1200 a year, when an indistinguishable internet quote from the same insurer was about £400. When I called the insurer about the renewal, the story was "it's an old policy we don't sell any more". Or more accurately, "it's an old policy we've ratcheted up by 10% a year and hope that people don't notice". I have a feeling that was LV as well...

This is always my concern with multi car.
That you make yourself vulnerable to a premium hike.

Given that people usually have more pressing things to deal with than unraveling their car insurance arrangements, it’s worth trying it on with them in case they decide just to pay up ‘this time’.

Of course it’s not just insurance. See what happens to your AA membership cost if you stay too long.

Like the OP, I have the same issue -- paid £640 last year and current quotes are coming in at £1000.

Waiting on my current insurer to produce a quote...

Just starting to reap the rewards of age and a decent NCB and it now appears we will struggle for a decent figure this time round. Due in December, not looking forward to it..

It is worthwhile shopping around every year at renewal time even though the rules have changed re new customers.

I am surprised people don't find the time to do this, even if it is to confirm your current insurer is still competitive.

Is there really any point in having any loyalty to a specific insurer?

I find it odd when people say to try X insurer.

I change cars often and always just do a comparison site check for the best price and the differences between insurers can be huge!
