1973 BMW 2002 Tii | PH Readers' Cars

Restored with obsessive levels of detail, this might just be the sweetest 2002 around

Many of us have bought cars that were in need of some TLC, whether that be a small bit of paint restoration or a check engine light that comes on the moment you leave the forecourt. Only the truly brave, though, think it’s a good idea to buy a car with a loose gearbox and an engine in bits. A bit like Scott.

You might know him as scottos on the forums, where he’s been diligently documenting the restoration of his stunning 1973 BMW 2002 Tii. Not only did the engine need piecing together, it was also missing a few crucial components such as a carburettor. Thankfully, Scott knows a thing or two about motors, having helped out at an engine builder since he was 14. With their help, he’s managed to piece together a glorious motor that currently develops around 180hp and revs all the way up to a screaming 7,500rpm. How he’s not gone deaf is a mystery.

Moreover, it's clearly a labour of love, with some brilliantly geeky touches inside and out. The gearbox, for instance, is the ultra-rare dogleg five-speed, an optional extra back in the day, while the badges hark back to the old BMW M Motorsport roundels. Even its back story, a right-hand drive car that started life in Germany, adds to the incredible history this 2002 Tii has amassed. But don’t take our word for it, we’ll leave that up to Scott…

Echo that. It’s got it all - based on that build, I bet it drives as good as it looks and sounds.

Looks amazing!

Although the article describes the car as missing a carburettor and injection system. How can this be so? Surely it should be one or another?

Likely just a typo.

Ref the car though , It's lovely. From an era when a BMW stood out from the rest and was thought of as a premium car unlike today when they're a white goods brand with goppingly bad looks...

Lovely thing and respect for your work to keep this car alive.
I have a real soft spot for these as they are pretty much the first car I remember my grandpa having and at the time BMW’s were a relatively rare connoisseurs curio.
Also I love the styling from this era.

Erm, pedant's corner here: a bit more than just a typo - more like a solecism.

Absolutely fabulous rebuild , beautiful car . I enjoyed the ownership of one in the early eighties and used to drive it from Guildford into Central London every day , was always worried about the Kugelfisher mechanical injection as nobody seemed to know much about it, I’m certain the Jenvey throttle bodies and associated electronic control are the perfect solution . Lovely to see the hard work of such a talented enthusiast featured in this way !

The concept of “built, not bought” personified.

This ^ is 50 years of “progress” from a design perspective ? I tend to think not.
