Hi, I am hoping someone can help. I have looked through the posts and DVLA and can't find the answer.

I have had to give up driving and I want to gift my private plate which is on a retention certificate. The person I am gifting to doesn't want to put in on their car yet. I can not see a way to transfer it to their name only to put it on their vehicle. Is there a way to transfer to someone else's name or does it have to go on their car?

Thanks,

Keith

I believe simply by adding them to your current retention certificate as “ nominee” ( not sure if you can do online or by post ) will achieve this without them then needing to instantly put on a car.

They can just keep the retention certificate with your name on it.
When they wish to put it on a car then all they need are the details from the certificate.
The only issue with this is if they do not put it on a car in the next 10 years and then they will have trouble renewing the certificate.

Thanks, if they then wanted to sell it, would it need to have been used on a vehicle before they could do that?

No and again afaik because then they would have the right to either assign or sell.
I had thought of replying as Scrump did but then assumed that a piece of paper with just your name on it may create issues.
