we've all got our favourite sounding cars (be it a 911RS, RS3100, C5 Corvette Le Mans racer, Scoobie, whatever) but which car/engine combo really sounds... well, dreadful?

I'd be going Merc A45. Yes it's insanely capable but, IMO, sounds like a bag of bolts.

Glad that wasn’t just me.

Most Ferrari’s built since 2000. Yes, they make a lot of noise, but it is just that, noise. They are nothing like as musical as most Porsche’s.

I might have missed the reviews but was the A45 ever highly praised or ‘rated’ for its engine note?

Every turbo 4 cylinder with those synthetic pops, bangs and crackles on the overrun.

Fiat 500 Abarth. Sounds like someone blowing raspberries down a length of guttering.

+1 from me. It would be forgivable if it went fast but it doesn’t.

Modern performace BMWs, they sound just doesn't match what the car is doing. Always seem to be loud and crackling regardless if the car is full chat or reversing into a parking space

^This.
They don't sound good at all.
Another would be any Ford ST or RS with a pop bang remap. They all sound broken. These maps must come with a flames neck tattoo voucher as well as all drivers seem to have them..

In particular modern Audi RS's, they manage to sound simultaneously boring and ridiculous... drone, fart, drone, fart, drone, fart.

But does anyone actually think they sound good? Apart from the little dhead at the wheel, of course?

Yep, an M4 near me that when doing 20mph sounds like an ancient derv with a misfire and a big hole in the exhaust.

This has already turned into cars you don't like the sound of, so I'll nominate the 4.4 V8 in BMW M cars.

Sounds dire for a V8. I know turbocharging makes cars sound flat but M cars just sound dreadful now.

I was quite disappointed with the Aston martin DBS too, suffers from the same muffled sound throttling despite having 12 cylinders.
