Porsche builds 100,000th Taycan

In just three years, too - imagine how many Macan, Boxster and Cayman EVs are coming...

With hindsight, nobody would have chosen September 2019 as the time to commence production of a very expensive, very complex electric car. Given, y’know, the minor inconveniences of a global pandemic and huge supply chain issues that have engulfed the industry since. But seemingly it’ll take more than a (hopefully) once-in-a-generation health crisis to hold back Porsche, as this week it’s made the 100,000th Taycan.

Even in normal times (remember those?), that would be a significant achievement for a car that kicks off at £75k in the UK. But for an electric Porsche - bringing together a badge with stacks of combustion history and fairly new tech with some infrastructure issues - it seems a really big deal. Any reservations that there may have been about Porsche taking on an electric car have been cast aside by the popularity. “We are very pleased to have reached this milestone in production history so quickly – despite the recent challenges posed by the semiconductor shortage and the volatile Covid situation,” says Kevin Giek, the Taycan model line VP.

The milestone car, a Neptune Blue Turbo S, is actually heading here, having been completed on Monday. Behind the US and China, the UK is the Taycan’s third biggest market. To mark the occasion, Porsche has tracked down a few Taycan owners that have passed 100,000 of their own - kilometres driven, that is. One French owner, Jean-Hubert Revolon, has already accrued 188,000km (or 116,000 miles) since just August 2020, which is some going. Are there any UK owners that are close?

With so many already having been sold, there are plenty of secondhand Taycans around for buyers unwilling to wait. And, well, it’d be rude not to look on such a special occasion. Don’t expect any bargains - the way the world is means the cheapest on PH is £85k - but there are undoubtedly some interesting cars out there. A Mamba Green Turbo S is certainly one way to make an entrance (and exit, presumably, with 760hp) - this 2020 car with 16,000 miles is £135k. Similarly, nobody is going to miss you in a Guards Red Turbo with colour-matched Mission E wheels and light leather, like a yuppie’s 930 Turbo for the 2020s.

That’s really just the start, too, with almost 150 of those 100,000 Taycans for sale on PH. It would be remiss not to mention a car specced with the Frozenberry paint; kudos to the original owner of this Turbo Cross Turismo for being so ambitious. It’s certainly a distinctive look with the allroad-style add-ons; with 5,000 miles under its 20-inch wheels, the price is £120k. Taycans certainly don’t come cheap.

Best finish with a flourish, then. This Turbo S Cross Turismo is Mamba Green (yes, again, we couldn’t resist) and comes with everything from carbon aeroblade wheels to acoustically insulated laminated privacy glass. It’s probably all the EV you’re ever going to need, but then that’s probably to be expected for £175k. Finally, take a look at this - a Taycan GTS (arguably the best one there is) in what looks like Paint to Sample Oak Green. Get those 21-inch RS Spyder wheels painted silver and you’re onto a winner…

Porsche hit a home-run with this car - like the strapline says, this is a taste of things to come once other Porsche BEVs are available to buy. 100k in three years is pretty impressive for them,

Good to hear that there are owners racking up the miles though the Taycan appears not to be Garage Queen prospect. Have seen a few around and the Audi E-tron, have to say the Audi looks a nicer car externally but both are very wide yet being driven on pot hole infested narrow lanes, the cars are clearly way over the middle of the road and the drivers seem to think everyone should hedge shunt to let them by.
If they can build that amount in that period of time there’s no reason they could not do the same with the halo 911’s and Cayman’s. Okay they may be making plenty of money now but cash in the bank is money for the future so i would churn out many more and up the price to flipper levels.

Two things to celebrate: PTS Oak Green GTS. There are people with taste AND money. Secondly, that they sell these in actual colours, compare to used Mercedes dull pallette of silver, greys and blacks.

I'm not really into EVs because I like engine/exhaust noise a bit too much. However I did like these when I looked around one, and I'd like a go in one to see what they are like. Electric is the now and the future...so I've got to get used to it whether I like it or not I think.

I will always look back fondly on ICE cars with good memories though for sure, but times change though.

Was lucky to visit the Porsche museum at Zuffenhausen on route back to Stuttgart airport a couple of weeks ago. Well worth the €5 entry fee. Shameless pic below. The Taycan is very impressive, the only thing that surprises me about the 100k production run is how well Porsche have done in securing materials for the cars power source to make that many. I’d have a Cross Turismo 4S if I were in a position to, the Oak Green GTS example linked is lovely. Was Oak Green not an original VW colour? Certainly one of my favourites on Mk2 GTIs.

Look at that. Stunning.

100,000 in 3 years - that’s a lot. Took Porsche 54 years to make 1,000,000 911s so the Taycan is huge for them.

Here millionth 911 in Irish Green, not my favourite, but Porsche does like green cars

https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-o...

Oak Green is lovely but has changed a little over the years, here some pics and videos. The Oak Green 930 is my favourite road car in the Porsche Museum.

Indeed, only 50,000 behind the Audi E-tron range, and one year less of production.

The Taycan is still the only EV I actually covet.

Mines a GTS Sport Turismo, in Aventurine green please.

My son-in-law has one of these. My god what a motor. I thought I was in a fighter jet when he put his right foot down. Took my breath away literally. Now I've had some quick motors but this thing ......................!

Great cars! Think I prefer it over its Audi cousin. My lad has one in his car pool along with an i4 m50, 2 X5 45e hybrids, an EQC 400, and a MiniE. With BIK on EV's being so low, and 3 phase chargers at the factory it's a no brainer! It's hard to believe the speed of EV uptake considering the price differential between them and an ICE equivalent. Me, I'm a bit of a dinosaur! Can't see past the petrol gauge.

Exactly this, even if you don't particularly like the EV, it's a very important car for Porsche. In Harry's Garage recent video he was saying how they effectively need to sell 3 Taycans for every 911 they can sell, due to the average brand range emissions thing, so this can only be a good thing really..

What happened to the article on the Audi e-Tron range? Seemed to suddenly vanish.

The other thing to note is, in the UK at least, the Taycan's residuals are still absolutely insane - even the cheapest one on autotrader is £82490... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202207218...

There can't be many mass-produced cars which trade either close to or over list over 2 years after their introduction?

If they produced more halo models, they wouldn't be halo (as much at least).

This, along with a minimum 18mth waiting list, just shows where real world demand is.

As for width, they are no wider than their contemporaries? M5/RS6 etc?
