Fair enough being a suicyclist and risking your own life, but putting your kid in this kind of danger is not acceptable. Absolutely censored moron!

Re-post. We've already been doing this for over a week, somewhere, can't find the thread now!

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

From a keen cyclist, with a slightly older child.

Sums it up. I tried cycling to work for a bit in a lawless part of Bradford. It soon became clear that it was only a matter of time before I got wiped out.

Not worth the hassle on roads that are just too busy. I certainly wouldn't be letting my kid ride on the roads.

Agreed.

MTB here, father of two under fives... and never cease to be astonished / sickened watching people trundle along with their kids in a trailer at eye level to passing HGV wheel nuts. I mean no, you can't wrap them up in cotton wool but as usual, a bit more self preservation or better still, preservation of your kids lives wouldn't go amiss.

Is it safe for a driver to close pass a cyclist of any age?

At what age should I allow my kids to cycle on the road?

I think I did my Cycling Proficiency at about aged 10, last year of Junior School. That sort of age makes more sense to me.

I guess these are the the questions. Driver was definitely in the wrong. Should a 5 year old be on a busy road in rush hour at 5? Probably not. Not because 5 year old shouldn't be on the road as such, more the roads are increasingly filled with entitled morons.

Im of the opinion that you should only be on the road having passed a theory test.

Cars, bikes, horses, anything for that matter.

We often see kids on horses round my way and I often think as they approach a roundabout have they any idea about priority, looking for indicators and just general road craft?

I genuinely don't know what the legal poisition is but for the safety of all road users it should become mandatory.

I don't cycle often but I actively avoid roads, I'll go on pavements, nature reserves etc where possibly where I can cos let's face it, no one walks anymore.

No way I'd be letting my son on the road with the amount of morons out there. Even when I'm driving I feel like I'm the only one giving cyclists sufficient space.

We did our cycling proficiency in year 4 I think and I cycled to school most days on my own from then.

What age is that? 8 I think.

I remember driving in central London a few years ago and there was a woman and man cycling near Buckingham Palace with 3 children behind them. By that I mean male at the front , lady behind on her bike and 3 children all on their own bikes behind the parents. The smallest child at the back was about 3/4 years old. The wheels on the smallest bike were about 8 “ diameter and it was all over the place. Absolutely nuts. The mother did look like her clothing was knitted from her own pubes and it had been a while since any meat had passed her lips though.
