Slight predicament and definitely a 1st world problem however I am looking at buying a saloon car however it is 4.9 metres long. The driveway can take 4.6m without any over hang. Would a 30 cm+ over hang cause issues?

I've seen some neighbours do this with no apparent issues however I'm currently living on a busy road so there will be quite a few pedestrians.

Before anyone asks there is not really anywhere else to park. Can't even park it outside as the other family car is there and also because it will block the next door neighbour and their illegal driveway but that's another story.

You're sticking a long way out into the road/pavement there, will it impede access for anyone in a wheelchair or a double buggy etc?

Personally I'd not do it, it's a bit of a gittish thing to do.

You risk getting tickets if your local council are zealous types.

It's a 'No' from me

I’d say you need to stop being poor and buy a house with a bigger driveway.

As with others, personally I would buy a shorter car. You'd probably be OK, but if you parked sticking out 30cm onto the pavement (which is probably a third of its width?) you'd have little room to complain if someone scratched your bumper getting past with a wide buggy or wheelchair; or if you got a parking ticket for obstructing the pavement.

Is the other car also longer than the drive?

It's not a third world problem anyway. Those who have cars have plenty of space to park them.

If the path outside was very wide, no not a problem for me. If the obstruction forced prams or disability scooters into the road big problem.

To me it's no different than a car that's too long for your garage. You wouldn't buy that, don't buy this.

This, but vertical. Buy one of those ramps they used to have outside Land Rover dealers. If you get a 33 degree slope your car will now effectively only be 4m long. Job done.

May need a step ladder to get in and out.

And take the rear bumper & exhaust off when you leave (** or front if you reverse in hehe)

It’s a no-no. Overhanging into the pavement or road is asking for trouble.

I have walked down streets before where every car is too big for the drive because the houses are small and the driveways aren't real driveways. If it's that sort of scenario and this car won't look out of place then you'll be okay.

Thank you all for the prompt replies, I thought that would be the case. Some of my neighbours do have their cars over hang (same size driveway). Strangely no tickets have been issued, I think because the council know how dire the parking situation is around here they would rather have cars over hang than people blocking the road.

As for parking at an angle, the 4.6m is when parking at an angle frown

Problem is that the smaller sportier saloons have rubbish interiors and cost way more.

That's a 30cm overhang even if you park right up against the house/garage door/hedge or whatever is at the other end.

Unless you want to crash into that every time you park, realistically you're going to end up leaving closer to 50cm of car hanging over the pavement.

I wouldn't buy anything much longer than a Focus for that driveway, either that or extend the driveway further into your own property if you want a bigger car. Obviously that's easier if it's a garden wall or hedge than if it's the front wall of the house, but for a car enthusiast surely converting the front room of the house into a garage isn't that much of a sacrifice............

Either that, or just park the long car on the road instead if you really want to own one.

MINI did a lot of nice interiors.

MINI Cooper 'Sidewalk' not a bad place to be:

There's always some bloody naysayer. I don't know, I come up with a practical, helpful suggestion...

Depends on how wide the pavement is. If a wheelchair or a side by side pram can get through I don't see the problem. Parking on the pavement isn't illegal outside London (iirc).
