A standard 20mph speed limit is MADNESS!

20mph is safer than 30mph everything else being equal. The problem is 20mph is so slow that it’s really hard to maintain the focus and concentration that even slightly higher speeds dictate. Probably for associated reasons, few seem to bother doing anywhere near 20mph so the whole exercise seems utterly pointless.

Easy peasy in a lot of modern cars and especially electric cars to set 'smart' cruise control and/or limiter to 20 and then just keep your eyes open and your foot over the brake pedal.

Granted that in a quiet village with wide roads, 20mph will feel oddly slow. But in classic english streets with parked cars and not enough room for cars to pass each other, 20mph isn't unusual (especially in cities).

We have 20mph in Merton etc and I go faster now that I ever have, just in case I come across some doing 18mph or so.
