It's called Autocar magazine.

In their new review of the Jeep Avenger (don't worry, you'll never see one), they describe is as "keenly priced".

It's a faux-4x4 the size of a Polo.

It's a BEV.

It's 34k!

Literally nobody is going to spend that on a small car, and most people can't even charge the damn things either.

The European car manufacturers and European governments seem intent on destroying their own industry with this rush to electrification. People will just keep their old ICE cars on the road for as long as they possibly can.

Finally!

A thread on PH about electric cars being expensive!

And that no one can charge them!

Been waiting years for someone to pick up on this.

One of my team had a courtesy car as her Mokka went into the dealer for something.

She was given an electric Corsa, she was impressed with it's performance and I guess by comparison it was quite nippy. I sat in it and it felt like any other normal hatch, modern enough but nothing 'wow' about it at all.

She looked it up on the Vauxhall website and it was £29k!!!!! For a Corsa and not even a high spec, performance model.

I don't mean this in a snide way but I suspect these prices don't phase many buyers as they'll just lease or PCP them and the actual RRP isn't a consideration.

That's nothing.

When EU7 comes into force - manufacturers won't be able to afford to sell cars like this. Even BEV cars will have additional ECO tests and regulations, such as the battery systems performing effectively for a minimum 10 years or 125000kms.
EU is also insisting ECU monitoring (remotely) of emissions systems to ensure the car is clean. That reads as additional expensive sensors in cars required to prove your car is clean - and we all know how wasteful it is to scrap cars early due to failed emissions checks/cats going wrong on otherwise serviceable cars. Plus big brother monitoring of your driving habits.

So if you want to know who is killing small, affordable cars, it's the EU.
I doubt you will be able to buy any new car less than the price of that Jeep by 2025. Manufacturers talking to the EU have also cast doubt on being able to hit the target of EV cars being sold for 25k euros by 2025. The benefit of EU7 vs EU6 delivers marginal gains, but at huge cost. The irony is, 90% of emissions in cities now come from cars, buses and trucks that are older and running with EU5 certified engines.
Getting rid of these vehicles has a greater impact that making todays clean cars even cleaner. But you can't tax older cars in the same way as new ones....

And the joke just gets worse. Some of the proposed EU7 standards apply not only to all new cars, but older ones too. They are just trying to kill cars and the car industry full stop.

laugh My new (to me) BMW M2 was 33k. I'm pretty sure I'll have more fun driving the M2 than anyone could possibly have in a faux 4x4 @ 34k

Like everything else car prices have gone up faster than wages hence they feel expensive.

On the other hand I feel there is an interest in making people go into a subscription model so inflating RRPs and offering manufacturers contributions to entice you to sign on the monthlies is positively encourage.

Car ownership will become a thing in the next in 30-40 years.

comparing a used car with a new car?. Did you not read your PH induction paperwork?

Not everyone considers high polluting, loud, handful in the wet, police & carjacker magnet, high on insurance, low on MPG cars as their ideal fit.

No I haven't, I must have missed that section. Whoops.

I was only jesting, the two cars aren't comparable at all, the only similarity is the price.

The M2 will likely be my last hurrah, before I move into the EV world. I almost bought a Tesla Model 3 performance. I want to experience the savagery of a fast electric car, but I just can't ignore a wide-arched, noisy, fast M car any longer.

Unless the legacy auto makers pull their fingers out and start producing more affordable EVs, the Chinese EV manufacturers are going to eat their dinner.

Don't get me wrong, i love an M2 as much as the next guy - closest i've come was a 35i z4 which was an experience lol. but decided to skip some steps and go electric to join the other half

Excellent choice, I love the 35i. I had one on my short list when trying to decide how to replace my Clio RS200 Cup. The M2 won and the Clio is staying for a while longer.

Which EV did you go for? Have you had much of an adjustment period while getting used to an EV?

6k MTBs are the Porsches of bikes, for cyclists who would have been on the golf course if they were born a generation earlier.

This Jeep is the equivalent of a Carrera hybrid from Halfords. But it isn't priced like one.

I've also noticed this. I assumed the bike journo's earned a fortune, as they all drive nice VW vans, have all the nice bikes (possible loaners from the manufacturers) and the bang on about how a 5k+ enduro bike is "an excellent buy and good value for money".

Wealthy families but keep it discreet. Who else can actually afford to work for free post-graduation to even get a sniff at a journalism job?
