Registration transfer
Discussion
Hi all,
I have trawled the internet and cannot find a definitive answer anywhere to my question, hoping someone on here knows....
I have just bought a new car which already has a private plate on it, I want to put that one on retention and put my plate (already on a retention certificate) onto it. Can I do this in one transaction or will I have to have the car put on its original reg, change insurance details, wait for the new V5 and then do it all again for my registration?

Somebody cleverer than me will be along shortly, but yes I've always done the latter:
1) Put plate on retention via internet, get revised number
2) Get plates, advise insurer...but tell them it's only interim, this have saved some admin fees
3) When new V5 arrives assign the retention number I've already got
4) Plates on & advise insurer
There must be a better way, but that's how I did it.

If you want to keep the 'cherished' plate that is currently on the car then this is the way you'll need to do it, in two stages.
If however you don't care about keeping the plate the car came with then you can just apply to put your retained plate on. Quite what will happen when you come to take that private plate off is less clear - you might get the current plate reissued but more likely the original age related plate I suspect.
