Yes, another insurance question - but hopefully a (slightly) more interesting one than usual.

Scenario is as follows;

I have two cars.
Vehicle one is my main car, insured in my name with full (19 years plus) no claims applied and wife as named driver.
Vehicle two is my secondary (dog, children and tip runs) vehicle with a separate policy and one year no claims earned on same vehicle. Again, I’m main driver and wife is named driver.

Wife has one car. This is insured in her name, with 7 years no claims and me as a named driver.

For various reasons, wife has just got rid of her car. Her policy is (was?) due to renew this month. As we now have just two cars, my plan was to move my 2nd car across to her policy to make use of her NCD (with me as named driver) and just lose my one years NCD. HOWEVER - doing this with her current insurer works out around £200 more than I currently pay on my single year NCD policy. Looking around online, the same is true as a “new” customer on pretty much all quotes - its substantially cheaper to insure my 2nd car under my name with 1 year NCD than in hers with 7 years NCD. Which seems bananas.

I’m of a mind to leave it in my name, and essentially just bin off her current insurance policy, but I assume this means losing her current 7 years NCD altogether which might be a bad call in the longer term.

Tl;dr…

Option 1 - car in her name, keep 7 years NCD, pay higher premium.
Option 2 - car in my name, lose 7 years NCD, pay lower premium.

Genuinely unsure what to do. Throwing away 7 years NCD seems barmy to me but is cheaper.

Go the cheapest option this year and review again next year.

Your wifes NCD will usually be valid for 2 years with most insurers without being used.

Take in your name if cheaper.
Try again next year with 7yr ncd in wife's name.

NCD is valid for 2 years after policy ends

Your wife can retain her accrued 7 years for two years before it expires, so you can always switch it around next year if it’s cheaper.
Of course the correct solution is to buy another car…..
