Car recorded as scrapped by unknown after I purchased it
Discussion
I purchased a car in what appears to be good repaired condition after a Cat S last year, mileage was 30 more than recorded at point of Cat S and have the V5.
Shortly after I purchased a scrapped marker was applied by DVLA. I got the car MOT'd as part of the pre-purchase checks which passed with no advisories. I have had the car SORN in our garage since purchase and was completely unaware of this marker until I decided to sell and found it could not be taxed.
There is no insurance record beyond the original Cat S.
Presumably someone has either deliberately or by mistake informed the DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped. Given the notification to DVLA was 6 months ago what is my route to get this resolved. The VIN markings all seem correct and obviously the HPI check I did on purchase only showed the CAT S as the scrap marker was only applied later.
Help please

I wonder whether the owner of the car at the time I.e. the person who had the accident and made the insurance claim, mistakenly believed they had to register the car as scrapped once the claim was settled, rather than transfer it into the trade as being ‘owned’ by the insurer?
I only say this as I had an elderly friend who tried to do exactly this as they believed the car was essentially scrap once it had been written off. It was only when I took them through the instructions issued by the insurance company that they correctly transferred ‘ownership’ to the insurance company.
The gap in time may be explained by DVLA delays and inefficiencies.
