A couple of years ago I bought a car that was sold on behalf of a deceased persons estate, it has a cherished number which I would like to keep and hold on retention for now.

Whilst removing the plate appears to be easy on-line with the DVLA as the V5c is in my name this paragraph has me concerned as to whether on removal the plate will be assigned in my name as I do not have the V778 from the current car. The next to last and last sentence appear to contradict each other.

"After you apply

Your original number plate will usually be reassigned to your vehicle automatically, if your application is successful. This will happen straight away.

You’ll be sent:

A new log book (V5C) showing the vehicle’s replacement registration number - it can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.

Your original MOT back (if you sent it to tax the vehicle).

A V778 retention document if the private number is in your name.

If the private number is in someone else’s name, the V778 document will be sent to them."

Might be worth a call but you can always apply for a replacement V778

Apply by post to replace a lost or stolen V750 or V778
You can send a letter to DVLA Personalised Registrations to ask for a replacement V750 or V778.

DVLA Personalised Registrations
Swansea
SA99 1DS
If your address or name has changed, you’ll need to include an extra document with your letter.

If your address has changed, include proof of your identity. This can be a copy of:

a household bill sent to you in the last 3 months
your Council Tax bill for this year
a bank or building society statement sent to you in the last 3 months
a medical card
your current British driving licence
your passport
your birth certificate
If your name has changed, include proof of your name change. This can be a copy of:

your marriage or civil partnership certificate
your divorce or end of civil partnership document (decree nisi, decree absolute, conditional order or final order)
a deed poll to show you’ve changed your name legally

surely all it means is that when you remove the number - you get the retention certificate if you say put it in your name, but if you choose someone else, they get it?

the number, while on a car that is registered in your name, is your number.
no V778 exists while the number is on a car
when you apply to remove it, a v778 is generated - at that point you choose whose name it is going in and as that can be you or someone else, the certificate goes to the appropriate person who then 'owns' the number.

so simply put it in your name at your address and you will get the V778

The retention certificate doesn't exist if the plate is assigned, so it will be issued to the keeper shown on the current V5. All this means is you have to be careful if trying to handle a vehicle sale without completing the plate transfer first, otherwise the new keeper could be processed first and then the plate transfer handing the plate retention to the new keeper.

Nicely summed up and clarified.

Just to add as the previous owner / estate didn’t retain the number then it was always going to be yours to do with as you wish.
I would definitely advise using the online service as all things being equal you will get all documents required back far quicker and easier.
