Subaru Impreza P1 | Spotted

Forget the 22B; this is the ultimate 90s Scoobie

It’s the late 1990s and the Impreza craze is in full swing. In Japan, Subaru fans are treated to the full array of performance models from the company’s performance arm STI, including such gems as the STI wagon and hilariously over-styled S201. But for us Brits, revelling in Burns and McRae fever, the best we got were the (admittedly brilliant) Impreza Turbo 2000 and a handful of 22Bs. More on that later.

With STI not launching as a fully-fledged performance brand in the UK until the second generation model, it was down to Subaru’s rally team Prodrive to serve up the hot Imprezas diehard fans were craving. Dipping its toes in the water with the Series McRae and Catalunya editions, which used the Turbo 2000 as a base, Prodrive really got into its stride with the RB5 in 1998. Created to celebrate the successes of future rally star Richard Burns, before his championship win with the team in 2001, the RB5 featured an aggressive new look, stickier Pirelli P-Zero tyres and, with the optional Prodrive Performance Pack, a power increase to 240hp. Not quite at the same level as the 22B, but the RB5 was over £10,000 cheaper and still relatively rare with only 444 units produced.

Then, at the turn of the millennium, Prodrive launched what many consider to be one of the greatest Imprezas ever made - maybe the greatest. Based on the Japan-only Type R, the P1 (derived from its codename: Prodrive 1) was officially the first two-door Impreza available in the UK market - and boy was it worth the wait. The upgrades were extensive over the imported car, namely a new ECU that increased power from the 2.0-litre flat-four engine to 280hp and 253lb ft of torque. Performance was blistering, especially with the P1 weighing as little as 1,295kg, meaning 0-60mph time of 4.6 seconds was possible. Or around 0.6 seconds faster than a contemporary WRX STI.

Best of all, Prodrive put the work in to set the P1 up for the UK’s naff roads, with some suggesting it’s more cosseting than the 22B. That being said, the P1 is still a fair bit firmer than the base Type R. Stiffer springs and dampers were fitted to improve body control, as were anti-roll bars lifted from European-spec Impreza Turbos. For reasons that escape us, the firm ditched the car’s Driver’s Control Centre Differential (DCCD), so no toggling torque between the front and rear wheels. Nevertheless, it chucked in ABS, air conditioning and a radical body kit designed by Peter Stevens (you know, that bloke who designed the McLaren F1) to sweeten the deal.

A very sweet deal it was, too. Not only did the P1 undercut the 22B on price, but it’s widely considered to be the more competent car. The 22B may have rally looks and that bespoke 2.2-litre engine, but when everybody’s favourite Japanese car show, Best Motoring, pitted it against the standard Type R – the 22B lost out. With the P1 effectively being a pumped-up Type R, you could argue it would likely triumph over Subaru’s golden child in a straight fight.

That’s all speculative, of course - what isn’t complete conjecture is the fact that a tidy P1 will cost you a fraction of the cost of a 22B. This 63,000-mile example looks to be a minter, which can’t be said for most Imprezas approaching their 23rd birthday, and it still has its original P1-engraved sports exhaust. The seller’s asking £44,995 for it, whereas this 22B will likely set you back well over £200,000 when it goes up for auction next month. We could argue all day which is the more desirable, but I’d take the P1 and drive it without worrying about resale values, thanks.

Dad had a deposit on one - I remember sitting in the dealers demo car. His deal fell through - but a work friend had one about a week later…!! Great car - good times - the one in the ad looks to be good value imo.

Seems to be about £10k more than they have been going for on CC’s.
Good looking thing.

Mate of mine had one back in the day, but blew the top and then the bottom end and finally gave up on it and even struggled to sell it for scrap!

Great looking cars but came with chocolate engines, shame the DCCD was ditched which was a huge bonus, to me anyway.

Remember a chap near where I used to live having one, for some unfathomable reason he swapped out the rear spoiler for a regular ‘2000 Turbo’ one. Rumour was that it was because he wanted the car to be ‘less obvious’….
I used to see on regularly up near J29 of the M1 with a mature guy driving it, often wondered if he had owned it from new
Never waned one, preferring the standard 2000 Turbo with the PPP and followed it up with a WR1, for some reason the P1 was just visually unappealing at the time.
Time however, does change one’s perspective….

Love these. Bought my first one new back in the day. Bizarrely traded it for an Evo 6, and while that was equally brilliant, I reverted to a near new P1 12 months later. Wonderful days. Highlight for Subaru ... and for me driving

There's one local to me that's been sat idle in a field for about 3yrs, lovely car but not worth the silly money that some appear to be going for.

I've always really liked these and the 22B. I still remember when they were really dirt cheap to buy though, so the price of this one did give me a bit of a shock to be fair. It is crazy how mad the prices of some cars have gone now I reckon, plus these have always felt cheap and nasty to sit in for me(like most Jap stuff being fair).

Compared to evolution 6 it was not as quick point to point but as a daily driver it's a better place to be ,the noise is lovely too .

I’d agree with that. Front end washes out on them, and they don’t respond as well or as reliably to tuning. They do look absolutely sensational though. I find myself hankering for lots of the 90’s metal now, the prices mean it’s a fantasy.

As a daily they were a better option.

Clearly maintained regardless of cost when it has mismatched ditchfinders on the rear wheels.

For the price, a Type RA STI for me (one of the most hardcore Imprezas’ from that era).

I wouldn’t say no to a P1 though.

I've been fortunate enough to have a friend that has owned most Imprezas including P1/22B, I could never really feel a difference with DCCD driving quickly on the road, and would argue the P1's suspension being better-suited to our roads enabled you greater confidence and speed over any of the JDM offerings he had.

Good marketing ploy, using a mix of UK and JDM parts to produce a halo car better suited to the UK roads than a 2door STI? Although I much preferred my TypeR, being honest.

Although the P1 had the same basic engine as the Version 5 STI, a lot people wrongly confuse the two and assume that they had the same 100ron map, instead the P1 knock sensitivity and advance was adjusted for 97ron UK fuel.
In fact my mapper once told me, that he used the base P1 map for STI 5/6 cars which reliably saw 320bhp on UK fuel.

Ironically, Prodrive also did a factory performance pack for the much softer UK spec cars, that despite a smaller turbo and lower overall power of 255bhp had nearly the same torque.

I wonder how many of the 1000 cars made are actually left?

These are lovely, but the value of Impreza's is becoming quite surprising!

Even the new age cars are getting silly, I have recently seen 2 hawkeye WRX's with over 80k on them up for near 14 grand. That is good for me as I own one, but it still blows my mind!

Intercooler looks like it's seen better days, but otherwise very cool and desirable, as the article says, at least you can drive it

The article says the P1 was the first two-door Impreza offered in the UK, but did the 22B come out earlier? I know only a handful of cars were offered here, but it still came first didn't it?

Regardless, it would still be the 22B for me. I don't think the two-door body looks all that good without the arches. I'd sooner have a four-door Type-RA if I was having a narrow body Impreza.
