Bentley celebrates 'extraordinary' year

Famed brand delivered more cars than ever before in 2022

The inexorable rise of Bentley continues. 2022 was another record-breaking sales year for the marque, pushing over 15,000 annual sales for the first time in its history. The actual total was 15,174 cars delivered. That represents a four per cent rise over the previous year.

Those sales were driven by increased demand in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and the Asia Pacific region, and comes despite a drop in sales in China and Hong Kong. As with last year’s figures, the company cites its Mulliner personalisation programme, increasing interest in its hybrid models, and the ever-expanding demand for SUVs as the main drivers of its success. The Bentayga was easily its best-selling model, accounting for 42 per cent of the volume, and with a strong order book for the recently launched Bentayga EWB, that number looks set to increase.

The good news if you’re not an SUV fan, and that means most of the PH fraternity, is that the Continental GT and Convertible remain popular, providing 30 per cent of the company’s sales. The GT Speed made up a third of the Continental’s model mix, and it was a similar story for the Flying Spur Hybrid, which accounted for a third of that range’s volumes globally. In the UK, however, the hybrid was even more popular, with two-thirds of Flying Spurs bought having the plug-in option. The Flying Spur range as a whole delivered 28 per cent of the overall sales numbers.

Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors, said, “In what was another year of unpredictability, the business overcame significant headwinds and demonstrated great resilience to deliver the third consecutive record sales year. This underlines our brand strength, operational excellence and strong global demand by market and model.”

Good on Bentley, but the cost of living crisis is not universal, it would seem.

Well yeah, I can't imagine it's those with £200k to spend on a car that are feeling the biggest pinch!

Good to see sales increasing.

Why should the cost of living crisis be universal?

There are many who are lazy and feckless, there are also many who live beyond their means due to the availability of cheap money who will now be feeling the pinch; there are those who've also worked hard, found success and thus are able to afford a Bentley.

I applaud the market growth for Bentley and sincerely hope they continue supplying luxury products to those who can afford to enjoy them.

Agreed. Lots of people complaining about having no money but won’t work more than 30 hours a week.

Good on Bentley and Rolls Royce, although I think I prefer the Bentley line up, maybe one day.

I would be curious to know how many Bentley buyers are living beyond their means with a PCP deal made possible by cheap money, and how many are genuinely able to afford one...

What an utter load of conservative cr*p. Never has the divide of wealth been so stark. The sheer number of limited run hyper-cars, eye-wateringly expensive one offs, personalisation departments is apt demonstration of that.

In countries like China and India (and more) shop floor workers work their asses off so their bosses can have Bentleys. They’ve put up with some outrageous conditions over the last few years, a quick Google will show you that.

I also applaud Bentley and other marks for their professionalism and understanding their markets, great business and I would never bemoan someone’s success if it’s hard and honestly earned, but your comments implying people struggle simply because they don’t want to work is utterly tone deaf.

Not really were they. A 'quick Google' will prove the posters utterly correct in their estimation of many folk's unwillingness to their make their own way in life so choosing to read this as a blanket statement for all just to make an impassioned speach, which itself was no less of a generalisation for anybody with wealth, was pretty lazy at best. It certainly didn't constitute being wise.

Well done Bentley by the way, and well done Rolls too.

First Rolls and now Bentley...regardless of who owns these brands, it's top marks to British engineering and manufacturing.

A good point - if the market for super luxury vehicles has been ultra buoyant and presumably profitable, if you haven't made hay when the sun is shining then ones future in a world where storm clouds are gathering might be in some doubt.

But maybe each of the big three German companies needs their ultra luxury British brand - would Aston be a nice fit for Mercedes?

Mercedes already have a stake in Aston. I'd love to see Audi buy McLaren personally but think if that was going to happen it already would have. BMW would be a good fit - bit of V12 history and they don't have a supercar brand in the roster whereas Audi do.

If you rely on a 'Quick Coogle' to 'prove' a complex point, that tells us all we need to know

Do you know a person like this?

Or is it just an idea you picked up without thinking?

C.40 cars a day out of the factory. Pinch of salt but not quite the archetypal bespoke brand I was expecting . Go Bentley 👍
