Nissan GT-R revised for 2023 (again)

Nissan has dropped the GT-R in Europe, but in Japan it's added two new trims including Special Edition Nismo

The Nissan GT-R is dead, long live the Nissan GT-R. If you’re confused by news of two new trims being added to a car that featured in our  Gone for Good round-up not long ago, don’t be. It’s dead in Europe, because over here we don’t like noise, which is why the GT-R was apparently pulled from sale. Over in Japan they seem to mind less, which is why the iconic model gets yet another tweak for a new year. That said, part of the upgrade does include changes to the exhaust to modify the sound - whether or not that's a prelude to the car being sold elsewhere remains to be seen.

Nissan says, ‘evolving toward ultimate driving pleasure,’ is central to the GT-R’s philosophy, and the new T-Spec and Nismo versions ‘enhance its status as a premium sports car’. There are now eight versions in total, with the new additions sitting at the upper end of the range. The T-Spec includes styling tweaks - most notably that new front grille - but also improved aerodynamics with a beefed-up rear wing and carbon brakes. It also aims to bolster the GT-R’s everyday usability, with a revised suspension set-up said to deliver a more comfortable ride. The company has also reduced unwanted noise and vibration with no loss of power; the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 still offers up 570hp and 470lb ft.

The latest Nismo variant has its own suspension and aerodynamic package and ‘maximizes the use of racing technologies’. It also adds a mechanical limited-slip differential to the front axle. Nissan says it’s the ‘highest-performance GT-R ever,’ with power stretched to 600hp and torque at 481lb ft. There’s also a Nismo Special Edition. Confusingly, the release implies this alone has 'precision weight-balanced engine parts, such as piston rings, connecting rods, crankshaft,' but quotes identical outputs to the engine in the standard Nismo. The Special Edition also adds a carbon bonnet with NACA ducts, while both Nismos have Recaro carbon-backed bucket seats.

Lovely. I heard that they're also issuing the T-Spec car as well, which can be optioned with Midnight Purple paint (rather than the Millenium Jade shown in some of the photos).

I'd still have one... if I had the money (and if it was available in Europe).

We need an R36, I'm surprised Nissan didn't sort this out because lets face it the last IC engined GTR will probably be the last GTR.

But i fear funding is not there. So we're left with this continuous flogging of a dead horse.

Nissan going down the Fiat 500 Abarth rabbit hole of special additions as opposed to phasing the old girl out! Still impressive piece of kit old or not! Keep going Nissan! At this rate the early ones will be classic and folk will be able to buy a genuinely new modern classic with warranty!

Couldn't they just rebody it like they did with the R34? Great car but getting a bit stale to look at.

To this day, I still don't know why I don't own a GTR. This one looks a tad OTT, but what a machine!

Hard to believe these were contemporaries of the 997.1 Turbo, and we are four years into the second generation of the 911 since then!

are they really that different to drive than the first r35's that came out?

a guy at work went to buy a r35 when they first came out, he was absolutely set on buying one - went to the dealer who (stupidly from his perspective!) offered him a test drive that in turn completely put him off the car as he said the suspension was insanely stiff

Agreed, I think the changes from the original are just too fussy lookswise.

It makes me desire the original R35 even more.

Not much wrong with a slight cosmetic update. Although will be pricey.

These are at their best when performance “fettled”.

nothing wrong with sticking to a recipe that works.

I find it rich that people seem to lose their trousers over old classics umming and ahhhing - but when a car manufacturer keeps making a legendary car for more than a few years its suddenly outdated.

I have zero interest in all the new electric and hybrid cars that will surely be a downsized nightmare to keep on the road once the warranty runs out...
this is a pukka sportscar that actually shovels a bit as compared to a GR86 which wouldnt be able to pull the skin off a rice pudding ...

How long before people start importing them over here to the UK?

And I wonder if we'll get the R36 over here?

This can be labeled as "OG" of some kind. And whatever that is, it's still good.

Yep, I still want one. I’m sure Litchfield with get a few imported over. The current prices of these have climbed steeply since they stopped selling them over here.
