Garage shared my personal info
Discussion
Hi all
Bit of advice wanted, I sold my car a few weeks ago. The car was supplied with a fully stamped history but I removed all the invoices as it had my name, address, mobile, email etc
So they guy who bought my car contacted the garage who did all the work, who promptly emailed him all the invoices with my contact details plastered all over them.
Is this not against data protection? Is there anyway of reporting the garage? I spoke to the manager at the garage and he sees absolutely nothing wrong with what he has done but I’m livid

I would've thought this was a GDPR violation - at least, that's what most places will be scared of and the reason they will give you when they won't give you someone else's data.Bit of advice wanted, I sold my car a few weeks ago. Technically, if you want to get excited about it, you can report them to the ICO for a GDPR data breach:
https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data...
https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/report-a-brea...
Practically speaking, does it really matter?

Hi, thats a GDPR breach, all you need to know is at:
https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/make-a-complain...

Yes it would be a data protection issue and fall under GDPR.
Have a look at the link - https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/how-to-make-a-da...

Wife works in GDPR. Def breach but if it’s a small local garage they’re unlikely to be registered with the ICO and even if you did complain they won’t do much bar writing to them.
So whilst you’re correct there’s no real recourse bar a civil claim but you’ll need to prove some damage has been caused (for example if data had been shared with an abusive ex-partner).

Did you not say in another thread about £1000 sheds that you were a trader? Which one is it?

Coming from a trader, scrap and export car prices are very high, so virtually all our cheap PX cars now go to recycling or to the export guys, we don’t put anything on Autotrader under £2000, where as in the past we would have a decent selection of £995 cars
Yes its a GDPR issue.
However its people like yourself moaning which means all service history is now being binned and all we are left with is a meaningless service book. I've got files for my cars which are worth a huge amount to the next owner but if I trade it in I worry the garage will just bin it to save the hassle from wingers like yourself.
Whats the worry you have? Have you sold a nail to an unsuspecting dealer.

Wow what a witch hunt this is turning into, so anyway I guess the answer is yes it’s wrong but there is nothing I can do about it, also if you don’t mind having complete strangers having access to all your personal info then this thread is clearly not for you, unlike the ‘good old day’ unscrupulous people can do a lot of harm with this data, just ask anyone who has been the victim of identity theft

To be fair, if you think like that, then the internet is probably not for you.Incidentally, you're not surfing on an Apple or Microsoft device are you? If you are, I wouldn't worry as your information will be out there already by now.

Of course, I'm a trader and I have a personal car. It gets worked on by the same garage that prep all of my stock & because we're all in the same job together I don't make mountains out of mole hills for them. I cant really see the problem tbh, unless you've just sold a lemon and you don't want the new owner finding out?123DWA said:
