Sitting at a junction near home waiting to turn left a car came from my right to turn left into the road I was waiting at. I thought no way is he making that turn at that speed and no he didn’t, crashed into the back corner of the car. No one hurt all being sorted via insurance and they have all the photos, does this tyre on the other car look a bit dodgy to anyone. I only noticed when I was uploading the photos, no wonder he didn’t make the turn.

Looks below legal minimum to me. No tread on the outer band and the depth markers look to be have been level with the tread for a while.

That’s what I thought, does that mean his insurance might be invalidated. He didn’t make a left hand turn and all the weight is on that left corner. Perhaps I should keep quiet and just let the insurance get on with it. They don’t have pics of his car and he has admitted liability.

Tyre looks rather shagged from that photo.

Reminds me of the white Evoque that visits their parent's house across the road from us - I walked past with the dog one day and noticed that the random Chinese tyres on the front and back passenger side were almost bald...

Even if it was bald, the fact it was his fault means his insurance company are bound to pay out to the 3rd party, i.e. You. If they even notice, they may not pay for the damage to his vehicle (even presuming he is fully comp). I'd take note of it personally if it were me, but not mention it if it all goes through OK.

You will be covered so let it be (unless he was an ar*whole then report it after the settlement!)

To be fair he was very apologetic and admitted liability straight away.

Keep the tyre pics in your metaphorical back pocket in case he wishes to play blame games later.

This!
It definitely wouldn't pass an MOT with that tyre, if not the others as well... 3 points each tyre as well.....
May be worth checking if it has a current MOT, not your problem as his insurance will cover you...

No one is going to tell from that picture.
BUT anyone who is saying it is illegal is pushing it.

The minimum tread depth bumps doesn’t look like they have been met so it’s fine all be it not in ideal condition.

Let the insurance companies sort it out no need to send in a true pic. You’ll be covered regardless.

Unless the road was wetter than it looks in the photo the worn tyre would have surely not affected the car's roadholding anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

So not an idiot as per the title. Just someone who made an error of judgement, like most of us have done at some point.

A figure of speech as you well know. However I’ll keep the photo on file for the future in case if I ever need it, hopefully not though. The MOT runs out in March so It’ll need them doing for then. It’ll no doubt be done when it goes in for repair, headlight smashed to bits so he won’t be able to go out tonight. Pic of ours for posterity, it’s a bit bashed but I think we came off better than him. Needs bumper, back light and a couple of parking sensors. Any bets on costs, im going for £1500.

Driving with what appear to be illegal tyres, in the winter no less, is enough to qualify someone as an idiot IMO...

You said you thought he was driving too fast and wasn't going to make the turn. So the tyres seem irrelevant, it was excessive speed that was the cause of the accident.

If they were travelling slowly and allowed room to turn in and you thought there was no issue before they inexplicably crashed into you, then the tyres may be of more interest.

That tyre looks to have 1.54mm of tread……..

OP doesn't state what his car is and it's not in his profile. I'd have to double that guess by the time you add on collection, delivery and hire car costs (if covered), more like £3k. scratchchin It seems to have separate trim to the actual bumper itself, it all adds up.

Given the outer shoulder of that tyre tread has ceased to be (there's cracking visible too), I think that this is probably a habitually bad driver who routinely plows into sharp corners in order to scrub the shoulders off like that. This sort leave little margin for error. In this case he left a negative margin and now your car is banged up.

I'd provide the photo to your insurer, but then I've got absolutely no time whatsoever for clowns sharing public roads with me and mine on worn out tyres. I couldn't give 2/10ths of a toss whether they live or die but as you've just found out, OP, they don't limit participation in their crashes to just themselves and that's when it becomes something I don't tolerate.

I’m with you about people who drive with duff tyres. No excuse. If you can afford a car you can afford tyres.
