Renewing a driving licence at 70
Discussion
90 days before your 70th Birthday the DVLA are supposed to send you a D46P form to renew your licence. This hasn't arrived yet.
Alternatively I can use D1 fron the Post Office or do it on line but i read somewhere while filling the on line form that I can only renew the "car" licence bit.
My licence which I've had since 1970 covers: AM/A/B1/B/C1/D1/BE/C1E/D1E/f/k/l/n/p/q which includes small trucks, minibuses trailers etc and motorbikes.
What are the experiences of the older fraternity of PH on renewing a licence,
Thanks

On the online form: https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70
It says
You cannot use this service to renew a C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlement - you must do this by post.
So if you're going to need those entitlements it'll be a D1 for you.

Thanks and kind of how I interpreted it, don't specifically require either however having gained these qualifications I don't want to throw them away. It says

Think I'll need a medical which the doctors charge quite a lot for these days

Worked fine for me.

Thanks, I'll hang onto it as a record should I need it, do you still have "Trailer" licence on yours please.
Yes. Please read on.I was 55 & my photograph needed updating approx 18 months ago.
Due to covid there was a massive backlog at DVLC, at that time they kept extending the expiry date of thousands of licences like mine.
They were encouraging people to use the online renewal system which would not, at that time, give you a 7.5ton / towing traditional licence. If I had used the online system (less work for DVLC) at that time they would have sent my new licence as the modern 3.5 ton type.
Hence I obtained the D4 & D2 forms (if I remember the correct codes) got a medical & posted it off to DVLC. Eventually I got the correct, direct replacement, traditional 7.5 ton / minibus/ trailer licence.
To add to the complication, I have been told that now, since leaving the EU, people of my age group are automatically receiving the traditional 7.5 ton licence ?
That needs clarification.
Those over 70 are another group. I can only suggest studying the DVLC website for the latest information.
Good luck !
Hi,
At 70 the old licence expires along with the extended entitlements. A new licence has to be issued and as per all new car licences since 97 this will be for cat B only (along with any cat A bike lics). The larger medium sized vehicles are a hold over from the pre 97 entitlements - C1 vehicle upto 7.5 tonne and D1 minibus up to 16 people (not for profit or reward). These are lost as the new licence will not have these on it. You would retain an entitlement to drive while the application process takes place.
To regain them you would need to go through the group 2 process - that is the full LGV/PCV application with a D4 medical form completed along with indicating on the renewal form you wish to retain C1/D1. It's not straight forward if there are any medical conditions present as you are sucked into the medical application route as the standards are different and more stringent. For instance the visual standards are a lot higher and any heart problem with result in investigations and probable delays

Thanks, yes I did have some "entitlements" due to getting my licence in 1970 HOWEVER, I took a test for minibus driving in 2005 or 2006 as I was going to be driving a Post Bus and I hadn't realised that I already had some entitlement. So surely I should retain that category? Think I need a Medical though which is probably not worth it as I haven't driven a minibus (is it of over 9 seats?) for many years. Just feel like they'retaking stuff away from me. Do need the trailer licence though. At 70 the old licence expires along with the extended entitlements. And this D46P form still hasn't arrived

Note: to add to this, you also lose the extended entitlements (aka ‘grandfather rights’), when you re-apply BEFORE 70, if you surrender or have your licence revoked for medical reasons. In my case it was epilepsy (established after a due waiting period as ‘asleep only’; now fully controlled at night also). Further, for an HGV licence you have to be 10 years free of seizures WITHOUT medication, as an example - I can’t believe all HGV drivers are adhering to similar medical restrictions such as that. The Glasgow bin-lorry driver incident is an example. At 70 the old licence expires along with the extended entitlements. It’s been straightforward for me. I kept my old licence, I said I needed some photo ID for probate. They had no issues with that.
You can also keep it because you may want to hire a vehicle in the meantime. I found this mentioned on the website. Skyedriver said:
