Had always aimed towards a 911 (997) and would have been in a position to start looking at them in about 25-26 but the move to electric, no new petrol cars and the war against car owners we seem to be heading for has me questioning if this is still something worth doing. It’s left me a bit flat tbh.

Has the move overall towards electric made anyone else recalibrate their dream car aims?

I do the window shopping/daydreaming/ having a goal to aim towards bit, but feels like something’s going to fk it for me towards the end. Not sure if it’s still worth aiming for now.

no, I don't dream about the cars I might own in the future. I feel like with the car I have now I'm going to stick with it. Might buy another of the same so I can rotate between the two and I'll drive them until I can't. 5.0 v8 is the base spec but also available with a supercharger or a 6.0 v12.

I don’t understand what one has got to do with the other…

Why wouldn’t it be worth doing? Even if you bought it 2029 you could still drive it for the rest of your life.

Relative performance, cost/ease of access to fuel, increased taxation and location restrictions, etc.

I've been mulling over buying a 911 for some time and have been looking for my perfect spec. (Nothing out there at my price point) so what with a new 911 almost impossible to get having talked to 3 OPCs, I have been looking at nearly new. I just can't seem to find the spec I want. So inevitably the budget is creeping North and it's got me thinking how sensible is it dropping realistically £100/120k plus in the current anti ICE climate and what may be coming down the tracks.

I do fear losing my shirt on this if the anti ICE gathers more momentum with more restrictions/obstacles/costs and the cars value tanks badly. As time goes on the dream is dying and I think I've reached the point that I now can't take the plunge at this price point. Could go with cheaper options but don't think I would bother changing my current car as it's not worth the change I don't think.

Yes, one option is to take that deepest of deep baths but this could be significant sums involved and could move house at that sort of money.

I've never financed a car before and I'm not starting now with a PCP to protect the floor of the cars value especially with interest rates climbing as well.

Can anyone give me any confidence that it's all going to be ok for a reasonable amount of time? Say five years ownership.

I seriously have lost all confidence in our governing classes so have no faith in 2030/CAZ/ULEZ stances not to be changed and brought forward or moving the goalposts yet again.

Crystal ball anyone? laugh

laugh Maybe I should shamelessly plug my own thread: 350Z/370Z, Z4C, Z4 35i, 135i/335i, XKR/XFR, Monaro, or...?

I'm really, really liking the idea of a Jag XK / XKR

Joined the silly club last May, thought now or never. Every journey is an event.

Does it feel anti social? Maybe, but I take a view we ALL do things that to some degree impact the environment around us, I don't personally do as many miles anymore, personal commuting is zero, I only commute to drop my wife at work and additionally I am not one to regularly jump on a plane somewhere like some would to top some tan up, much preferring to explore the UK.

thumbup

It would be a crime not to consider a V8 before they're legislated out of existence, I reckon smile

Ok, so say you buy a 911 in the next couple of years, and then for the sake of argument let's imagine that come 2030 the policy changes, ICE performance cars are banned from the roads and are hence worthless.

In that hypothetical scenario, what do you think you'd more likely feel?
A) "I wish I hadn't spent all my money on a petrol performance car that's now worthless"
B) "I'm so glad I took the chance to drive a really great sports car while I had the chance, I've got great memories to bore my friends with now we're all humming around in our mandated EVs"

For me it would always be B, so the concern of increased limitations in future is an incentive, not a deterrent, to buying something great today. I actually considered your thoughts in 2007 when I got my first 'quick' car, and concluded I wouldn't regret it either way.

Notwithstanding that, I think your concerns are overblown.

If relative performance is a concern because you need to have the fastest car in a straight line, then a 997 Carrera isn't the car for you anyway, plenty of 4WD turbo machines that'll outsprint it.

There are barely enough affordable EVs to replace the new ICE cars that are bought each year, let alone to be cheap and plentiful enough to accelerate the retirement of the existing ICE fleet. Therefore petrol cars will continue to be widespread, and thus fuel available, for at least another decade beyond 2030. This isn't even a question of policy, it's impossible to make enough EVs to replace everyone's ICE cars that quickly.

The same goes for taxation, the 997 is legally in the same category as lots of other ordinary cars relied upon by not-so-well-off families, it's not even in the top CO2 road tax bracket.

In terms of locations, the Euro 4 petrol / Euro 6 diesel seems to be a fairly stable urban clean-air zone criteria, and note that a Euro 4 petrol has the same NOx emissions as even the latest Euro 6d diesel (80 mg/km), so there's not really any rationale for restricting them further in the medium term.

Ultimately driving any car right into the centre of a properly big city is something that not everyone can do due to sheer physical weight of traffic, so generally there is a case for using charging to manage congestion. This doesn't represent a wider 'war on the motorist' though.

This is an inherent problem with dreaming of future happiness. It doesn't have to be restrictions on ICEs, all sorts of factors in your personal life could intervene and come between you and your goal - employment, living overseas, health, relationships etc. Or you might achieve your goal, buy a 911, and then find out it that owning one isn't as fun as you'd imagined.

My approach has always been to buy the car I can afford today and enjoy it, and worry about tomorrow when I get there. So far this approach has yielded a lot of fun from cars that cost me less than £5k to buy, it's also led me to put a deposit on a somewhat higher end vehicle that I pick up next Saturday, if that helps illustrate my view on our motoring future.

So if I were you I'd buy a Boxster or something and enjoy it today, maybe you trade up to a 997 in a few years, maybe you don't, either way nothing can take away the enjoyment you'll likely be having in the meantime.

Sort of. I have for a long time had the plan to build a Caterham when I retire (which will be on or after 2030). No way I have the time to do it before. Now, I am unsure if that will be possible (though the recent price rises have meant it looks increasingly unlikely either way…).

Having said that a friend is selling his Cayman and offered us first refusal so might end up with the Porsche ownership box ticked if nothing else!

All good points to consider, so thanks to posters.

For clarity, performance relative to electric is the consideration, not to other ice stuff. I have a fast bike too so that’s not the be all end all of it. It’d just be weird it having the same power as a washing machine with wheels.

Wrt depreciation, this is something i’d be saving for, so it would be a bit of a kick in the bks if it was legislated worthless.

Don’t see the tie together either.

Feels like you’re extrapolating to worse case scenario in every way OP.

Cheer up hehe

I’m currently sorting out my next 911, trying to come to an agreement on a Targa. *drool*
