Hi.

New car owner will be coming Sunday to pickup the car. I want to keep the plate.

How do I make this happen? I'm hopelessly lost in the DVLA website.

Thanks!!

Use the apply online function. Otherwise it won’t be removed before sale and will technically go with the car!

It’s only open 7-7 which is why if you have tried recently it may not be working.

You’ll have to wait to get the new V5 unless the new owner is happy to take the car without one.

Type "Retain a number plate online" into Google, follow the link to the DVLA/GOV site, do it online.

You'll have to pay the £80 retention fee.

If it says it cannot be done online, you'll have to send a paper form off in the post and wait for the new V5 to arrive.

Either way, you must have the new V5 in your possession before you sell the car, otherwise the buyer cannot change the V5 to their name and become the new registered keeper.

If you sell it with the private plate still on, the buyer then also gets the plate.

Thanks everyone. Looks like it's too much hassle to get done in time and I don't want to worry the buyer.

If you do it tomorrow, there’s a good chance the new V5 will get sent to you by Friday.

Agreed, if it retains online you should be ok.
