Coming home tonight, a 2 to 3 mile stretch with Average speed cameras at each end.
It set me thinking, is there an app or device that I can instantly turn on when entering the SPEC zone and it will calculate average speed on the move so to speak. There are two hills with overtaking lanes to get past lorries etc but easy to exceed the 60mph limit so it would be nice to look at a screen to see the average speed for the past 2 1/2 miles say and then I know if I need to ease off a little to come within the limit before exiting the zone.
I don't want to be fiddling with the car satnav as I drive and don't want completed journey times/speed etc. I normally have Waze running on the mobile for traffic updates etc but just hitting a button to start a calculation would be nice.
Is there a device I can plug in like I have a speed camera database on the dash top (old Speedcheetah) ?
Does this make sense ?
Cheers
Brian.

There used to be an app called CamerAlert which used the Pocket GPS World database, which would switch to show you your average speed when in a detected specs zone.

The website is still up: https://www.cameralert.com/ but (at least on IOS) it seems to be abandonware as the last update to it was 5 yrs ago.

Use the GPS Speedo on waze to get the exact speed, that will generally set you cruising slightly faster than traffic with overreading speedos.

From there, any time you spend "under" you can mentally bank, any time over you can mentally "owe"

If you've done any manic rushing in a given section, just have a safety pause before you get to the camera.. Not as simple as a calculator, but until someone rolls it into waze :P

I feel like one of the roadangels or similar devices may have the functionality.

I use the onboard trip computer for this. Hold down the button to zero as you enter the av speed zone and the readout then shows accumulated distance with average speed until you zero it again. Works a treat.

Don't most cars these days have an average speed display with user reset? Just reset it when you enter the zone and it'll tell you.

Thanks all, some real help there.
I will have to sit in the car tomorrow and play with the infotainment screen. Technology just moves too quick for me these days ! Cheers.

The snag with resetting the trip computer is often you want the other info there for eg. MPG info, and that gets wiped at the same time.

There's a couple of apps on the google play store, I'm going to give this one a test over the next few days and see if it's up to snuff. Been wondering the same thing myself (whilst driving) and never got around to searching for it after the drive!

Would be a nice default feature for satnavs to have...

AmiGo on Android which is free and used to be called TomTom Go or something similar.

I have it on my phone but I haven't used it for a while but it if hasn't been changed then it knows when you enter an average speed limit section, tells you how many miles to then end of the section and tells you your average speed for the section. It also warns of fixed and mobile cameras. Not surprisingly it is not infallible.

Sometimes it moves slower, so it's average speed is just about ok.

And remember that your Speedo is inaccurate. But consistently inaccurate.

If TomTom knows it's an average speed zone, it'll show the average speed while you're in the zone...

The onboard computer on my 24 year old E36 3 Series has an average speed function. It displays your average from the moment you press the "SPEED" and "SET/RES" buttons simultaneously.

I know this might sound a bit stupid, but why not just stick to the speed limit for the 2-3 miles?

It can be quite liberating not having to panic and drive yourself nuts with all sorts of equipment to monitor, just so you don't get a speeding ticket.

Don't get me wrong, I'm quite partial to sticking the foot down, but I would always take heed of "The time and Place", and I wouldn't consider a 2-3 mile stretch with average speed camera, the "right place" so simply wouldn't bother.

You just set the cruise control and leave it at that.

Wouldn't it, on the other hand, be nice to know for sure if you have drifted over and need to slow down, exactly how much... those 20 mile sections of average-speed-camera motorway soon add up! (especially when not in a vehicle with cruise control or a settable limiter).
