Range Rover 'Lansdowne Edition' unveiled

Bespoke spec limited to 16 cars, priced at a quarter of a million each...

Last time there was a £250k, SV-badged Range Rover around, it was the old two-door Coupe project that was ultimately cancelled. Pity, that one always seemed quite cool. Now the SV badge is back, on this ‘Lansdowne Edition’ of the new Range Rover.

Described as showcasing ‘Range Rover’s distinctive, refined design’, the Lansdowne Edition has been revealed at a freshly redone Mayfair showroom. Which might explain why there are more pictures of the boutique than of the car – we’ll attempt to track some more down. The spec of the new SV is ‘inspired by Mayfair’s iconic architecture’, with Lansdowne Grey Gloss outside and a Rosewood interior.

Additionally, the Range Rover gets metal script badging front and rear (hand crafted by Fattorini, Britain’s oldest family-owned jeweller, don’t you know, so careful at the car wash), 23-inch wheels, a Corris Grey Gloss roof that’s apparently a contrast with the other grey, plus the event suite boot with leather cushions. It’s all very plush, just like the Mayfair showroom. If only we could see a bit more of it.

As well as the SV Bespoke Rosewood and Ebony upholstery, the interior of the Lansdowne gets Moonlight Chrome accent finishes, mohair carpets and illuminated treadplates with ‘SV Bespoke - Lansdowne Edition 1 of 16’ script. Good job there’s plenty of space in the door for that.

Interestingly, all 16 of the new Ranges were spoken for ahead of the reveal, each costing £250,000. Still, lovely new showroom to pick it up from, at least. Expect plenty more showrooms like Mayfair, too, as the company moves to a direct-to-customer-agency model by next year. Range Rover says the switch will ‘elevate customer experience both in showrooms and online.’ Fingers crossed that includes a few more car pictures, too.

The only people who will be able to 'admire' this limited edition on a regular basis are the mechanics at the dealership because it will spend most of its time there being repaired, if my RR is anything to go by!!

The Linley Range Rover was probably the last time they had a similarly marketed product. The margin on these must be huge.

Isn't it traditional when writing about cars to actually show a range of photos of the car?

Sounds promising, but I would rather they concentrate on getting availability of some improved interior leather colours and exterior paints.

available for delivery in 2027 judging by JLR's current wait time.

a family friend ordered a fully specced up autobiography in May 2021 and has been told she may not be seeing it until Q2 2024 "due to delays".

Good move by JLR. There was too much overlap between Land Rover and Range Rover brands, given the new Defender can be a well over 100k.

Land Rover can move into Range Rovers old space and Range Rover upmarket into Bentley territory, the market for which is doing really well. The uber rich keep getting richer, would be good for JLR to cater for them as well.

Not convinced that's £250,000 worth, but the 16 buyers do so that's all that counts.

Was the original Mr. Lansdowne a famously massive mug?

But realistically, some of the people going past that showroom window will literally have more money than they know what to do with.

The best thing to do is to help relieve them of the problem and to hope it does someone else some good down the line.

nope - still no ideas the relevance of that name to this model?

The Mayfair showroom (which has just been done up and where this was launched) is just around the corner from Lansdowne House, an important Adam town house (or it was until they knocked half of it down).

It's also 'traditional' to actually have a car or the ability to make said car before you sell it....

As someone who is 1 year in from placing an order with no delivery date in sight, this is another lost tradition!!! (latest ETA H2 2023)

you really can't buy these things!

Current leadtime for a full size range rover was quoted to me as 24 months last week. Thinking about placing a second order now so I have one for when I move the first one on! (IF it ever arrives).

The market is bizarre and (IMHO) cannot continue as it is. Eventually supply will catch up with demand, or interest rates drop demand to meet supply.

Either way, the initial outlay of £250k is big, however the real pain might well be the depreciation.... will it be worth £100k 12 months after purchase when the market corrects?

Can’t imagine anyone spending £250k on one these gives a stuff about depreciation.

Landsdowne. Very apt - it's all about managing the breakdown.
