It used to be very common back in the seventies or so. You were driving past another car the same as yours and a little wave or flash of the headlights.

It's still seemingly a thing with VW campers and classic cars.

Does anyone else remember this?

I get this in the Boxster. Also get a wave from people in 944s, but never from 911 drivers.

Land-Rover drivers do. Drivers of rectilinear Land-Rovers anyway.

Used to do this when I had my Clio 182, my wife used to drive it to work everyday and it did confuse her when people would wave at her or flash their headlights.

I occasionally get a wave from drivers of other 996 and 986. Never get a wave from air cooled 911 and only very rarely from newer Porsche.
When I drive my daughter’s yellow 107 I get a wave from another yellow 107 in the area.
My mother has a orange and grey smart forfour and she exchanges waves with other orange and grey fortwos and forfours.

I had a chap in a nice Red Guilia wave/flash the lights when I was out in the 159 recently. I must admit, I haven't initiated any waves though, until the other day, when I saw a nice 156 Sportwagon. They looked at me as if I was mad! I then wanted to look like I was stretching my hand instead laugh

When I had the i8, I waved at others in the area, they always waved back.

Also the FK8, always got a wave back from other owners.

Quite few of the cars I've had I've never seen another one in the area, or out and about to wave to!

Only seen tanker drivers do it - and then only milk tankers.

In the MX5, yes, more often than not.

I now have a bright red Jag XF; there are two similar one (same year, same colour) locally who wave.

Air cooled VW and MX5 seemed to be a thing, only that.

I've had a few cars where people would wave and I always found it odd - just because they have the same car as me doesn't mean much. They could be a serial killer or something. biggrin

Anything rare / unusual tends to wave, I've found. Old Defenders, Ford RS cars, Lotus (Elise drivers would wave at my VX220 hehe). Teslas used to back when they weren't everywhere.

Used to get this all the time back in 2000 when I owned a Subaru Impreza Turbo. I would never wave to other drivers, but I would respond when they did to me. However the novelty wore off very quickly and I was barely lifting my hand off the steering wheel to respond.

Never had it any car before or since.

I used to wave at other Saab 96s in the 1970s and other MGBs in 90s.
Now I wave at other Mustangs. And get waved at - its still a thing.

I get a wave from other TVR owners, but I get many more waves and smiles in my other old car, even from pedestrians, probably from nostalgia. Its a 1975 Triumph Toledo, getting rare, and I use it regularly. smile

Definitely a thing with MX5s. Also i30Ns in about 2/3 of cases.

Agree with the MX5 waves mentioned. I always try to give a wave (and they're common enough that on a sunny Sunday, you could be waving 5 times on the way to the shops). Most wave back, sometimes you get a wave out the top of the car, for full open top enthusiasm.

When I owned my Jaguar XK, I got nothing from the - almost invariably - older gentlemen driving past.

I like the little wave of recognition; it's a silly little thing that reminds me we're all human.
