Hey all, my nephew tells me his car insurance quote has doubled from last year, and that other mates are saying the same.

He is 19 and drives a Golf R, now has an extra year's NCB, but the insurance quote is double.

Anyone have similar experience? What's going on?

He’s 19 and drives a Golf R?

At 19 I was struggling to insure a 85bhp Citroen AX !

Even now, in my 40’s, with 13 years NCD and zero points, I’d wager I’d still be paying well into four figures to insure a Golf R.

Maybe your nephew should consider something a little more sensible, insurance-wise, for the next six years?

Much more than that surely. I was paying that for a Ford Escort over 20 years ago

I’m going to take a guess at close to £4000.

Just for balance, I’ve found my insurance premiums to be stable or decreasing slightly in the last couple of years (mid 30s with 5 cars insured). Zero effort to shop around at renewal as a result, I’m sure I could get a better deal but both admiral (yes yes I know) and Lancaster haven’t jacked mine up so I’ve just rolled over.

Mate of mine's son's insurance at 18 when he passed his test was £4000 for a tatty Corsa a few years ago. London.

The lad that bought my e36 2 years ago had to pay £3000, living in Southampton, 19 years old.

Most people I know have had their premiums increase this year to be fair... I'm 24 and mine was going to go up by £100, but I haggled them down to a £50 increase which is still better than any comparison site quote I got. Bit depressing in a way as my insurance has always gone down in price but frankly it's still much cheaper than the quotes I was prepared to pay when I bought this car, so I'm still happy (and they'll cover a re-map for an extra £10!).

Frankly if your nephew managed to insure a Golf R as an 18/19 year old then I'd probably say he got lucky and found a gap in the algorithm, so the lad is probably going to have to suck it up or come back down to Earth and get something st and slow like the rest of us had at that age.

Between 18-20/21 I didnt pay anything as Ford gave me 2 years free insurance on a brand new fiesta.
Never seen them offer that deal since hehe

Back in '96 aged 17 I paid £1400 to insure a Renault 5 gtt third party that I had paid £1100 for. Quote was way overpriced as there was no chance of me crashing it because it was always broke hehe

I used to do about 20k miles a year and was paying £1300 a year for insurance on a diesel 1.6 A3 (I was 26 at the time).

Now my mileage has decreased by about 75%, my cost of insurance has gone down by about 60% (albeit with a different car but similar type of car).

Golf Rs are also cars that are highly sought after by criminals etc. Therefore they will probably cost more to insure than they used to (especially with chip shortages etc).

It helps if you drive a car that probably isn't a statistical nightmare in terms of theft and accidents ( no access to figures, just seems likely).

A car more under the radar might help.

i was going to guess at £2000 to £3000, but thought no, thats ridiculous, no one would pay that much for car insurance....

I don't know...

I was surprised when one of my younger cousins said his insurance was around £300 (mine on a F31 320D was £450). Then he dropped the bombshell that his was PER MONTH!

In total he was spending near £800/month on his 3YO car & insurance...so he's obviously getting lots of overtime at Adsa..and if that's how he wants to spend his money then fine, but I think my first car was £600 (1.0L Metro, paid in cash) and the insurance was about the same.

I've only once paid over £100 in 30 years of driving, and that was when I first modified my Corrado VR6. Probably due to the combination of adding the mods and increasing my mileage to 25k per year and adding business use, as I was driving all over the UK to different offices. The following year it was below £900.

Can't comment on current increases for 'young driver' insurance, but both of my premiums have gone up over 20% this time, and nothing has changed other than mine & the car's ages.

It can get that high for old people - FIL was paying £200 and something a month for his Astra in his final year of driving. And that was a few years ago.

Renewed wife's Tiguan with LV earlier this month and it dropped 25% for no obvious reason. First time though, it had been going up a few quid every year before. I switched policies (but stil with LV) last year as the renewal price on the old policy she had was bonkers.

I wonder if it's been one of those cases where it gives a surprisingly low premium as the system doesn't expect someone of that age to be driving such a car?
