I recently PXd my vehicle at a main dealers some 40 miles away. The next day I noticed it had been given a fresh MOT and had been taxed which meant that someone was quick to get hold of it. I'm one to keep all of the old paperwork including the service history booklet so I took it in expecting them to look at it and bin it all through GDPR.

A number of weeks later I've seen it turn up on Autotrader as a private ad just around the corner from me and one of the images has all of the invoices laid out with my details clearly shown.

I thought as a minimum, the main dealer is supposed to sanitise this information now? Ive asked for the image to be taken down but I'm considering raising the issue with the head office of the dealer as this surely is a breach of GDPR?

Why didn't you bin or sanitise personal details before giving it all to the dealer....?

This is a strange one. There was a thread recently where most of us were annoyed at dealers that throw everything away. rolleyes

I just took it in as a full history pack because I've never PX'd with a dealer previous as I usually buy privately. I did ask them if they were going to dispose of the pack and was told that they would under GDPR. Given its a massive main dealer I didnt expect my name and address to turn up in photos on AT some weeks later!

I used to shred invoices, which is what the dealer should have done. I would be having a word with them.

By voluntarily giving all the old invoices without being requested to provide it, I think under the GDPR rules that could be taken as the OP giving permission for that information to be handed on.

Or to look at it the other way round, what did you expect them to do with the invoices other than show them to potential purchasers?

To be clear, I took it as proof of the history. Id told them it had FSH and along with the book, provided the invoices from the history. I wasn't quite sure how much attention would be paid to them but given that they looked through them and then told me that they would dispose of them, I had no reason to doubt them. Its a huge national dealer, not some back street trader so you would expect the basics on GDPR to be adhered with.

Why is is such a problem.

I always leave the service receipts in the car when I part exchange. I’ve often had the new owner contact me to discuss the car. I’ve always welcomed such enquiries.

Sounds like it was purchased by someone who worked at the dealership, hence not going through their standard procedures, after being given a quick ticket, and then remarketed as a private ad an Auto Trader.

If you were concerned about your details, you should’ve removed them. I love getting a car with a load of receipts to support the service stamps!

When I bought my CL I was handed a whole pile of paperwork including hand written bits and pieces the lot. I was chuffed to bits with it all and I'll pass it on to a future owners.

But I'm surprised the dealer didn't cover themselves by at least redacting the addresses. But as said further up in the thread. The fact that the papers were handed over voluntarily could be seen as permission to pass them on.

Just get in touch with the Information Commissioners Office.
https://ico.org.uk

They control all this GDPR business and will be able to tell you what's what. From my annual mandatory training knowledge, it sounds like there has been a breach of some sort, but the rules are a bit tighter for medical info so who knows?

I see your point, but before GDPR would it have bothered you?

I had to contact the ico recently due to an ex employer, they took 5 months to get back to me regarding a medical breach. Financial and medical records are the two that raise concerns.

It wouldn't bother me in this case, but it is a breach, not too sure what you can do apart from raise it with the dealer.
