How are trade plates attached over the number plate of a car?

Yes, most traders don't bother and just shove them in the front and rear screens.

But they are now required to attach them over the existing plate, so presumably some of them now do that.

So how is that done?

Bit of used chewing gum?

Or can you buy some sort of clips to attach 2 plates together?

Have the rules changed recently? The last time I looked you weren’t to cover the existing plate.

I use a rubber holder with a strap you can either trap in the boot/bonnet or hang on a rear wiper

Nope - I got it wrong.

Outside the vehicle but not covering the assigned plate.

Anyhow - can you get clips to attach a plate over a fixed plate?

I need to clone a car so that I can hoon around a bit cover a display plate that's glued to a car.

Yes. Very cheap too. You probably got some in your kitchen drawer at home.

Need a better solution than that!

Want to be able to take the 2nd plate off easily when required.

Also want it to be secure so I don't need to be looking out for it flying off at NSL.

Chewing gum may actually be the way to go.

When I, briefly, worked for BCA Logistics shuffling cars, I was told to place my trade plates on the top of the dashboard and on the rear window shelf.

There are various solutions on ebay

The metal spring clips (like they use on trailers) seems the best solution

Fix them to your cover plate and clip onto the original one

How do trade plates work ?
I saw a You tube video picking up a car from auction with no MOT.
I thought they would trailer it but they put on plates in the window and drove it to their house.

Their use is for when a vehicle isn’t taxed. It needs to have an MOT, if applicable, and their use is defined on your application for the plates. Nothing else.

They must not cover the existing plates unless on a motorcycle.

All here: www.gov.uk/trade-licence-plates/rules

Unless you have a link to a recent update?

They are regularly misused - they only replace the tax element

Hence the police "red and white - stop on sight"

You also aren't allowed non trade use - or dropping your kids to school etc

I was never stopped. The only words I had were from a copper waiting for me outside a McDonald's. He had convinced himself I was from a local car sales emporium and had just put a set of plates on the car nearest the front to do a burger run. "If I see you doing this again..."

From then on, if I was doing a long run and needed to stop, I'd park somewhere discreet and hide the plates.

There is rule bending, but trade plates are a can of worms most police officers would rather steer clear of.

Look what you've done. You made me end a sentence with a preposition.
