M62 and Bad Weather
Discussion
News today reporting on people stuck on the M62 overnight.
I am not from the area but know that if there is a whiff of bad weather then keep away from the M62. Is this just Darwinism? Could we prosecute any of them stuck for driving without due care and attention or just being generally retarded?

If it was that self-evident that using the M62 last night was a bad idea, then the Highway Officers could have put up a sign saying Road Closed.Given they didn't, you can hardly start prosecuting people for using the road.
I would suggest
- not indulging hindsight bias (how many times are similar weather forecasts not followed by significant problems?)
- extending sympathy rather than judgment towards people in trouble (we don't know what information they had at the time or what alternatives they had to making the trip)
- accepting that life involves a level of risk (which means sometimes bad things do end up happening and it's no-one's fault)
and if you're truly concerned about fixing this problem
- considering what system changes (better information, more supervision, requirements for snow tyres, ...) might be made, which would more effectively reduce these sorts of occurrences in future than blaming or calling for punishment of individuals who may or may not have made a 'bad' decision.
The weather up there can turn very quickly. The M62 does well when it snows but we have seen changes to cars which make them worse in snow.
I remember going over the top when the snow was coming in sideways yet most were steadily making progress in ordinary cars. Now they have such wide tyres and traction control, which you need to switch off in snow otherwise you go no where. Even the biggest 4X4 have tyres meant for summer weather.
As others have said you cannot blame people if there are no signs saying there are issues

But you can blame them for lacking common sense and ignoring the barrage of weather warnings, “Snowmageddon”, wall-to-wall hype about “Beast from the East” etc. I remember going over the top when the snow was coming in sideways yet most were steadily making progress in ordinary cars. This morning the schools around where my daughter lives were all closed, do not drive warnings but she had to go to work otherwise would we expect hospitals to close?
Somethime people have to travel regardless and some are unprepared for that journey

And we shouldn’t need to be “told” to do or not do something when there’s shed loads of information sources, starting with looking out of the window?
I came down the A5 from North Wales this morning, and I checked the road reports before I left. I avoided the Horseshoe Pass which had been hairy on the way up on Wednesday. When I heard about the M62, I too considered if any of them had really HAD to try and make that journey. Perhaps the impending snow, which was regularly forecast, didn't make tik tok or FB.
My experience today is that whilst there is 2" of slush down the middle but the tyre track parts are clear, and it's not freezing, you don't need to potter along at 30 mph in derestricted areas. I overtook several vehicles, in a 1975 Triumph Toledo 1300. Perhaps people are just unaware of how to drive, or how to prepare to drive in such conditions now that they are rarer.

Can we prosecute and ban you for posting retarded guff? I am not from the area but know that if there is a whiff of bad weather then keep away from the M62. Is this just Darwinism? Could we prosecute any of them stuck for driving without due care and attention or just being generally retarded?
there should be a law to place very very tough restrictions with more accountability on those wanting tougher restrictions and punishment for others when the action of others hardly impacts themselves.

I do roadside recovery around the north west.
Most jobs last night were bogged/ditched Huddersfield/Bradford/Leeds way.
Unfortunately most other roads heading towards Yorkshire were shut, woodhead, snake pass, a635 etc... People however were just driving past the road closed signs and flashing lights and ringing us when they inevitably got stuck. That left the m62 as the only viable option to travel across to Yorkshire as Blackburn, Darwen were also hit bad aswell and roads closed around there
It was chaos in the end not looking forward to tonight's night shift either
