DVLA - taxing and changing plate at the same time?

I've purchased a new car. I've received the new V5 today and will be changing the number plate over to my personal reg, and taxing it 1st april.

Question is - if I change the plates over today (online) will I still be able to tax it on the 1st April with the current V5?

No, tax it first and then change the plate as you'd need to wait for the new V5 before taxing it otherwise (I fell into this trap...)

bloody DVLA! managed to tax online, but tax check shows untaxed.... unable to change plates - assuming tax status needs updated. Tried the DVLA web chat - 404 errors, called the phone number shown on website - polite message to say DVLA can t take the call then cuts off. bawbags!
