Firstly I unfortunately don’t have £66k.

But based on the new M2 as a manual price of £66k… how many people would actually buy the M2… vs something else? If you had that as a lump sum to spend on ONE car only.

Would you instead buy a used R8 V10… or a new Emira, or a Cayman GT4, or something rarer and more unique like a classic 1982 911 SC?

Ps. It has to be one car, any left over cash you can use to either mod or restore whatever you buy.

For me it has be a toss between Emira V6 touring (from lotus and not from a dealer who’s charging a premium so you can get it sooner) or a GT4 Cayman. I’m not sure the new M2 would even come into my shortlist if I had a list of ten cars.

Lexus LC500 for me I reckon.

But the M2 is not unique in having a crazy list price, it's more an event when a new car seems reasonably priced nowadays

With you on that one. Let someone else take the hit.

I’ll go for a 981 Spyder, thank you very much.

Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio, preferably Montreal Green. Could probably just about squeeze a new one into that budget looking at Auto Trader.

LC500 is a great shout, not a car i would ever have thought to suggest myself either but really does tick a lot of boxes. comfort, performance, looks, reliability, rarity. Nissan GTR would have been my suggestion otherwise.

Once you get over £20k most people are using finance, so the list price is a way of making the finance look like a bargain.

If you take a car costing £40k to build, sell it to a dealer for £60k, they "rent" it out for £22k and then put it on the forecourt second hand for £50k they've made a st ton of money but the punter feels like they got a bargain, because the rent was less than the depreciation.

Plus, there's an old Yorkshire saying. You don't get owt fer nowt.
Turn it around, The more it costs the more desirable it is. Billy big ballocks can tell his friends about his £80k car to impress them, but actually he's renting it.

It would entirely depend on what sort of practicality I needed from the car.

If you can still get a nice manual Honda NSX for £70k, probably one of them.

Hmm, £65-70k doesn't go as far as you'd think (certainly aren't getting an Emira or GT4 for that money).

When you say one car do you mean I can only buy one or that it has to be my only car?

If the former then probably an A110 GT or Cayman GTS 4.0 (as I already have an RS4 for the tip runs etc) if the latter then an RS6 or Giulia QV depending on whether my kid(s) are still in the big pram or not.

Assuming it’s a my only car, my default “do it all” answer for this is RS6 avant. I would spend more like 40-50k on a decent example, keep a bit aside for running repairs.

If it’s an addition and doesn’t have to do the family duties, I’d get an Aston DBS and run it for a year or so, then try and unload it for as close to what I paid as possible.

Defender 110, the new model all the car I'd ever need.
Or... a totally refurbished nut and bolt restoration of a late model Range Rover classic with a 4.2 v8
Or... same scenario with an original Defender110.
Not some silly sports car anyway.biglaugh
