Some sort of wild animal took a disliking to my brother-in-law’s Yaris on the dual carriageway the other night. The only evidence that it was an animal at all were a few hairs embedded in the damage. Probably a muntjac deer now with a nasty headache.

I don’t think that’ll polish out.

Has he checked in the engine bay?! Reminds me of the BMW one where much of the deer went through the one of the kidney grilles:

The Yaris range does tend to attract the old Deers...

Oh don’t say that. I couldn’t bear to look. It is odd how there is no visible gore whatsoever. I honestly thought he was lying about hitting ann animal when I first looked, but sure enough there were just a few telltale strands of fur, trapped in a section of the shattered inner wing liner. It’s incredible how the impact has simply peeled back that steel wing and bent all of the steel frame to which it attaches, especially when it would seem that the plastic bumper and headlight took the initial hit. I think what was left of the bumper has pinged back into position, but the other lights are just dangling by their wires on the floor.

I dealt with a fatal crash on a dual carriageway that involved a Jag XJS which had been travelling at speed.

Struck a deer broadside, the carcass of the deer smashed through the windscreen and the bloody remains were then forced through the very small rear window and were in a conjoined mush of flesh and fur for a good stretch behind the car.

Initially it was believed that there was one occupant but on closer inspection there was a pair of ladies shoes in the passenger footwell, one of which had a foot still in it. That was it.

I can recall that scene so vividly and not one of the nicest sights I saw in my time in the Police. Proper mess.

A few years back I was on the Fosseway and saw a car way up ahead moving down the verge with his hazards on. As we got closer the driver had got out and another car was pulling up behind. The driver looked in a state of shock.
As we passed I realised his door was caved in and the window gone. A deer had ran out straight into the side of his car.
I was probably an overtake away from it being me. It really shook me up as I had my wife and daughter in the car. I hope the driver was okay too.

It's even worse currently as we went into lockdown with too many deer and two years of not enough culling and it feels like we're in an epidemic now.

Traditionally, most people crash on or near the fosseway due to be startled by a corner or being hit by an kerb after an evening of heavy drinking. But the last couple of years the number of deer related events seems to have gone through the roof.

Not a lot you can do when one of the daft buggers runs into the side of you but most of the time you'll crest a hill to find one standing in the road just staring at your lights vacantly.

Muntjacs seem to travel in pairs but stick to established paths so you tend to learn where they cross near you but their trick is for one to dash across the road in front of you to get you to brake a bit but relax as it's gone, only for the second one to leap out last minute to get you.

About a hundred years ago my grandfather skewered a red deer one evening on his motorbike. He woke up, missing his front teeth, two broken legs and a few other issues along with his bike sticking half through the deer. He then had to just lie and wait until being found by a farmer later the next day. Which must have been fun!!

We certainly need more venison on menus for the issue to be remedied.

Driving towards Peterborough (PeatBogHorror) on a 60mph single lane carriageway in a nice Carlton CDX hire car. There's an oncoming HGV and a deer runs out in front of it. The HGV punts the deer into my direction and the front of the car takes the impact. Everything is broken, but the headlights still work albeit with no lenses.

I call Alamo to report it and am put through to their Heathrow branch which is the only 24 hour operation. I tell the guy what happened and he goes mental on me, shouting down the phone that I've injured an animal and have to call the Police and report it. I call the Police and they give me a reference number but say it's a deer, it's off the carriageway, so they're not bothered about it. I call Alamo again to see if I can get the car swapped over or wait for recovery.

I'm told that if I can get to Heathrow, I can get a replacement car. So I drive back down the A1 and M25. Because of the smashed front, the heater is stuck on full and I have all the windows open. By the time I arrive at Heathrow, my legs are red from the heat and have blisters on them!

I get served by arsey guy on the phone and give him the Police Incident Number. Fortunately arsey guy is so pissed at me for animal cruelty that he forgets to process the £250 excess for the damaged Carlton.

Oh deer!

Living in N Norfolk we have this issue when driving through the wooded areas at dusk and dawn, I have instructed 'er indoors to obtain insurance and contact details of any deer that she hits.

We constantly see dead deer on the roadside, so this is a real issue in the area and Parish Councils, bless them, have erected signs to warn us of potential deer strikes.

So far, we have either been lucky or careful!
