Hennessey creates 500hp VelociRaptor Ranger

The new V6 Ranger Raptor is the fastest Ford truck ever offered here; obviously Hennessey had to make it faster

We knew already that the Ford Ranger Raptor wasn’t as powerful as it could be. In Australia the twin turbo V6 gets another 100hp over the 292hp offered in Europe, because of regulations and whatnot. So there’s undoubtedly tuning potential in the engine, potential that Hennessey has, predictably enough, run with. This one has more than 500hp, as well as 550lb ft. Hennessey’s mantra is ‘making fast cars faster’, after all, so they’re certainly doing as advertised…

The VelociRaptor 500 Ranger is based on the US-market car, which is rated at 410hp and 430lb ft. The Hennessey package doesn’t touch the engine internals at all, the jump to 500bhp (or 507 metric hp) achieved through ECU tuning, a high-flow induction system and chunkier intercooler. Which are quite some gains. It’s not clear exactly how those upgrades would work on a UK car (or indeed if they’re going to be available here), but this is proof, if it were needed, of just how tuneable the V6 is.

The car seen here has been given the full VelociRaptor overhaul, complete with new wheels and 35-inch off-road tyres, bumper upgrade, Hennessey badges and even embroidered headrests. Just 200 are going to be made for 2024 (further production hasn’t been confirmed), with conversions under way once ‘an intensive period of R&D’, both on and off road, has been completed. Production should kick off in the fourth quarter of this year, with an asking price of $25k for the full VelociRaptor kit, complete with a three-year/ 36,000-mile warranty.

John Hennessey said of his company’s latest car: "The VelociRaptor 500 Ranger is an excellent choice for the pickup enthusiast who doesn't need the capacity of our full-size VelociRaptor 600 F-150. The midsize pickup is incredibly capable and very agile. In addition, our 500-horsepower upgrade will noticeably improve low-end torque, and it's got a lot more power for those who like to really push their trucks in mud, sand, or on the open road." Orders are open now, and ‘international shipping’ should commence before the year is out, so maybe there’s hope after all. An orange one with 500hp would be pretty cool…

The $25k is for the full package - performance, wheels, new bumpers, interior etc.

Footballists, who want to pick it up today rather than wait six months for import and paperwork.

Not this one though, who wants the little brother of the mental F150 VelociRaptor?

You have to assume a UK tuner like say Celtic or DMS could do the remap etc.

I struggle to understand why anybody would want to buy one of these in the UK, although some obviously do. Without a canopy anything (of value) you leave in the back is at high risk of being stolen. The handling dynamics of these things are poor compared to a half-decent saloon or estate. Most people don't have anywhere (or any need) to seriously off-road it. If you're in western Texas or New Mexico etc. it may make sense to some, but even there a basic F-150 or Silverado is more than enough truck for most folks.

I guess it's a case of showing people because they can.

You’re right. Pickups just do not sell well at all in the U.K…

Because they are a nice place to be? No concerns about road surface, loads of glass so good visibility, relaxed drive - I loved running my old (2000's) F150.

Tax incentives for pickups as company vehicles over other SUVs?
A branded pickup is a rolling billboard for any business?
Can be used as a family car too, unlike a van?
Looks more in keeping in some business settings ie. building sites?
Towing capability and overall practicality?

There's loads of reasons someone might choose a pickup in the UK, all of those still apply to a Raptor, it will just cost more!

I listened to the recent podcast with John Hennessy and he seems a really likeable guy, just enjoys pissing about making stuff faster.

I've got 3 pals that each have the Merc pickup - X-Class? Bodied Nissan/Toyota?

2 of them are loosely in the building/property game, the other has an old house with huge gardens that he enjoys tending.

They all love them, car/SUV like, but just easier and more flexible loan space. Yes they have to be careful of valuable cargo, but majority of carried cargo is very low value and often very heavy.

Pick up truck thread. Always gonna contain posts referring to size of truck for British roads (too big, obviously), a description of the stereotypical owner (tatoos, vest, anger issues) and a reference to 'footballist' (poster too cool to know what a football player should be called) or something equally inane. It's cliche bingo at time here. Not got a full house yet, but give it time...

I think that truck looks great and would be great fun. Size...no problem....stereotypical owner, no, footbalIST, no. I just like what I like.

Edit, I an aware others have posted they like it but the thread will head down the cliche rabbit hole at some point.

I was running a 750i and the Sagaris at that point.
